Tampa look to Chicago again !!!

Today, the City Council’s Finance Committee approved a mandatory furlough plan for 3,273 city managers — and voluntarily added aldermen to the list of those giving up one day’s pay to help plug a mid-year budget shortfall.

“If we’re going to spread around the pain, we ought to be willing to accept some of it ourselves,” said Finance Committee Chairman Edward M. Burke (14th).

Ald. Ed Smith (28th) added, “If the city has suffered a shortfall, I don’t have any problem with us chipping in to make up the difference. It’s the right thing to do. Taxpayers pay. Why shouldn’t we?”

LOL !! I can almost (but firmly NOT QUITE) see this in Tampa.

It's an empty gesture at best.

And a shout out to the others in the 'opines' who make more sense than any of these people who somehow find themselves lying to us all in public office. By the way, my taxes are MINISCULE. I'm just interested in doing the right thing --- they should not have been spending all that money like pigs in dookey and Pam Iorio and the growth and development dept (add them to the stalking list by the way yawn video and pics, for GODS SAKE) did not need 100 new cars and she did not need to increase her staff and shop all over the country for high-priced new thieves and miscreants. We can find the worst of the worst right here in Tampa, eh???

Mayors vent fears of losing control of taxes June 7, story

Don't we elect mayors, commissioners and legislators to represent us? So how come when there is a rare, clear mandate from the people, in this case to reduce taxes, our honorable "representatives" seem to be doing everything possible to prevent it from happening?

Come on, guys, we need some help here. And don't tell me that reducing taxes means no police or fire protection and the closing of libraries. We had all of these services in 2001 and were doing just fine.

What we didn't have were the plethora of city works projects, like sidewalks and planted medians, fancy new pedestrian stoplights, multiple bridge replacements, etc. Take a look at the projects completed by your various departments since 2001 and you'll find plenty that we couldn't have afforded before. That's where the extra money went, the money you received simply because real estate values increased, the money we don't want to give you anymore.

The problem today is that when real estate values drastically increased, the millage (based on your budgets) should have seen a matching decrease. Instead, you took the unexpected windfall and spent it! Don't you understand that we don't have more cash just because the value of our homes increased?

Roll back your budgets to, say, 2001, cancel any new departments and terminate any positions added since then, and I dare say most of this outcry will go away. After all, the Save Our Homes cap wasn't a problem until you took advantage of the real property valuation increases.

Please quit fighting us, join our side and help us - as you were put into office to do.

Republican PUNCHES OUT Democrat

Ala. lawmaker punches Senate colleague

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - A Republican state senator who punched a Democratic lawmaker in the head expressed regret, saying "that's not the way grown men solve their problems," but he said he won't immediately apologize.

Republican Sen. Charles Bishop claimed that Democratic Sen. Lowell Barron called him a "son of a (expletive)" in the Senate chamber on Thursday.

"I responded to his comment with my right hand," Bishop said.

Alabama Public Television tape captured the punch.

"I was raised in the woods (obviously) of Arkansas and people don't say that about your mom," Bishop said.

Barron denied saying that to Bishop. He said the Jasper senator used an expletive to him and he was trying to get away when he was hit by Bishop on the side of the head near an ear. He said he had not decided if he would file charges.

"I would like to finish today in a productive manner. I will evaluate the situation tomorrow on what I may do," Barron said Thursday.

After the punch, Barron went into a closed-door meeting with other Democrats. Sen. Vivian Figures went into the meeting carrying first aid supplies, but she said he was not hurt.

The fight came on the final day of the 2007 regular session of the Legislature. Republican senators were using delaying tactics to force Democratic leadership to bring up an election reform bill to ban transfers between political action committees.

A brief aside: In the past I've been known to make the statement that I wish that Congress and Senate (isn't the senate sposed to be the dignified body??) cared enough about US to punch each other out over their strong need to TRULY represent their people -- you know ... as in arguing for the GOOD OF MANKIND.

This doesn't fit the bill.

(oh and I'd be as appalled if a dem punched out a rep over politics, punch each other out over health care and illegal spying and criminal activity ... oh, that's right the above IS criminal activity. My bad)
