Banking and Me

If I ever made a real mistake in my life I believe it was when I left banking. It's not that I haven't made 'mistakes'; it's that I'm HAPPY about them.

Yknow?

Anyway, it's a good thing that I made the decision to leave banking behind because that was when I stepped out of my bubble which my Grandpa created with loving hands. I know stuff I would never have otherwise known. I won't go into that because .... I love what my Grandpa did for me ... my loyalty to him is unmatched. And deserved. I truly believe he is the best man who ever lived. And I hope you are lucky enough to feel the same way about your own Grandpa. Mine was handsome. Really a kinda debonair that made the girls I worked with comment on how nice-looking he was and did he have a wife? Oh he did. And, she deserved him. They were the Kennedys. Only better.

Anyway .... so if I cuold go back and I don't want to. I wanna go back go back and do it all over ... (i don't) the one thing I would change would be to stay in banking. I could have almost everything I have NOW and still have the coolest job ever in the world.

The folks I left behind in banking for the most part are the only people I have a certain loyalty towards other than some schoolmates and etc. It's the only job I ever had where I felt I was leaving behind friends.

I should have stayed.

But, at the time, I needed other things. Money, for one. If I'd waited just a bit longer quite likely I would not have a blog (DAMN!!!) because I'd be a Bank President or VP, beholden to a board of directors for my behaviour.

That's okay.

Banking is where you learn discretion. Money. Weasels. But, mostly WARMTH and LOVE and family. My bank is growing and thriving and not too long ago I realized that the one place I would return to if I could ... (not talking vacation spots or comfy places here) ... would be to my banking career. It was a good one. And the people were those you could respect. If something happened to one we might whisper but we had that person's back. Like a family.

Sadly not all of them were like that. Some of the most surprising ones were sad.


Anyway ... if I ever had a goal in life that I put above all others it would be to see my Grandpa nod in approval. I'm sure I've mentioned that here. He would stride into that bank with his chest out and his money tucked safely away (not all of it but enough that I knew he respected me) and ask my opinion. My Grandpa who trolled through the Roosevelt White House.

Fine.

I think that whenever I speak up about that monstrous motherfucker in our White House currently that my Grandfather smiles down upon me with something resembling inexpressible satisfaction.

He did his damn job. He MADE ME even though when he was gone I almost methodically took down the safe place he made me. Guess that had to happen.

Wish more people could do at least THAT much. Just your job.

I wonder if I were a banker today if I'd be up in Tallahassee pretending everything is hunky dory as Alex Sink is.
