A Hero has gone on too early Barry L. Beyerstein

I've not made it much of a secret that I'm a HUGE fan of Lindsay Beyerstein over at Majikthise.

I was deeply saddened today to read that her beloved father, Barry L. Beyerstein has passed away much too young.

What ASTONISHED and lifted me and revealed how little I know about the world I live in (still, no matter how much I read and read) is that in re-reading the comments I discovered a common thread between myself, some of my friends, Florida, Lindsay and Barry Beyerstein.

(and disgustingly enough, another connection to DICK Cheney, Mel Sembler, Joe Lieberman etc...)

Seems that some time back in the 1990's Barry Beyerstein investigated and then wrote a report on the psychological abuse occurring in Mel Sembler's Straight program which was run with iron fists by some loonies. I knew some people that went through that program back in the day. I believe they are enslaved somehow. Smoke a joint, whack for life. Once they went in all of a sudden their parents would try to talk OTHER parents into putting their own children through the program. Those who went through Straight report being stalked and other heinous activities and the ones who have normal-ed out either FIGHT them, sue Sembler or run scared.
I don' t mean this in a light-hearted way. Some of these people still are not quite 'right' and some of them have really struggled to return to some semblance of normalcy.

So, Florida ----- every one of you here has a reason to thank and mourn Barry Beyerstein whose courage and honesty exposed a monstrous archaic practice that was performed by one of our very own local developers.

I, for one, know that I am very grateful that a person took time out of his life to expose something heinous that apparently so many others were happy enough to profit from or overlook.

Amazing man.

A true loss for us.

If any of you can remember how scared you were when you found out one of your friends was being sent to 'straight', you will understand how thankful I am that someone like Barry Beyerstein came along and did the right thing.

Thank you, Mr. Beyerstein. There could have been many more victims !!


Lucky us that you passed this way and it's my understanding from reading the HUNDREDS of comments that were left that this was just one of many life accomplishments for you.

And in Hillsborough, Armor's bid was millions of dollars higher than three others. It got a boost from a late decision to eliminate price as a consideration.

Two sheriffs who bypassed Armor said fellow sheriffs have called them and plugged the company. They identified those sheriffs as Ken Jenne of Broward, Ric Bradshaw of Palm Beach and J.R. ''Jack'' Parker of Brevard.

Ex-Hillsborough Sheriff Cal Henderson told The Herald that Armor hired him as a ''consultant'' shortly after he left office in January.

His duties, he said, have included lobbying sheriffs in at least six counties -- Marion, Collier, Sarasota, Manatee, Leon and Lee -- where healthcare contracts were pending or anticipated.

Besides Subpoena-ing the head CUEball Cheney, Senator Leahy is also working VERY VERY hard to restore the writ of habeus corpus. This, as I hope you know; is why you are allowed out of jail once you find yourself in one. As well all should know:

the 'corrections' gimmick is all about money. THINK of the money they earned arresting, jailing, bailing, prosecuting and sentencing all of Daniel Brock's victims. Most of his victims are probably still on probation and unable to drive and support their families. MORE money. Where's all that money go? Well, I can answer that. It goes to buy MORE correction officers like Daniel Brock. I shouldn't say this but I think he looks a lil bit crazy and if he pulled me over I'd probably call for backup. When peoples' eyes don't blink it makes me nervous. LOL !!!

Think of the THREE TIMES AS MANY that the Tampa Police are arresting (two of em anyway) ... Then, think if it was someone you know or yourself. Please support Senator Leahy as he tries to correct the mistake made by Congress. I signed on to his petition which is making progress and he is asking us to notify others.

As you know, of all the rights guaranteed by our Constitution, none is as important as habeas corpus, which gives any person who has been jailed the right to challenge his or her detention before a fair and impartial court. For centuries, habeas corpus has been a powerful tool for protecting freedom. Today, that right has been stripped away from millions of hard-working legal residents of the United States.
Last year, Congress committed an historic mistake by suspending the Great Writ of habeas corpus in the Military Commissions Act. Like the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, the elimination of habeas rights was an action driven by fear and a stain on America's reputation in the world.
The Military Commissions Act eliminated habeas corpus permanently, for any non-citizen labeled an enemy combatant -- even someone “awaiting” determination of that status. The sweep of this habeas provision goes far beyond the few hundred detainees currently held at Guantanamo Bay, and includes an estimated 12 million lawful permanent residents in the United States today. These are people who work and pay taxes, people who abide by our laws and should be entitled to fair treatment. Under this law, any of these people can be detained, forever, without any ability to challenge their detention in court.
We simply cannot leave 12 million legal residents of the United States at risk of arbitrary detention. It violates the fundamental values of this nation.
That is why I am asking you to take one more step in this fight. We need to build even more support in Congress to restore habeas corpus and respect the rule of law.

White House, Cheney's office subpoenaed
By LAURIE KELLMAN, Associated Press Writer 25 minutes ago
The Senate Judiciary Committee subpoenaed the White House and Vice President Dick Cheney's office Wednesday for documents relating to President Bush's controversial eavesdropping program that operated warrant-free for five years.
Also named in subpoenas signed by committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., were the Justice Department and the National Security Council. The four parties have until July 18 to comply, according to a statement by Leahy's office.
The committee wants documents that might shed light on internal disputes within the administration over the legality of the program, which Bush put under court review earlier this year.
"Our attempts to obtain information through testimony of administration witnesses have been met with a consistent pattern of evasion and misdirection," Leahy said in his cover letters for the subpoenas. "There is no legitimate argument for withholding the requested materials from this committee."
Echoing its response to previous congressional subpoenas to former administration officials Harriet Miers and Sara Taylor, the White House gave no indication that it would comply.
"We're aware of the committee's action and will respond appropriately," White House spokesman Tony Fratto said. "It's unfortunate that congressional Democrats continue to choose the route of confrontation."
In fact, the Judiciary Committee's three most senior Republicans — Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, former chairman Orrin Hatch of Utah and Chuck Grassley of Iowa — sided with Democrats on the 13-3 vote last week to give Leahy the power to issue the subpoenas.
The showdown between the White House and Congress could land in federal court.
Leahy's committee and its counterpart in the House have issued the subpoenas as part of a sweeping look at how much influence the White House exerts over the Justice Department and its chief, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.
The probe, in its sixth month, began with an investigation into whether administration officials ordered the firings of eight federal prosecutors, for political reasons. The House and Senate Judiciary committees previously had subpoenaed Miers, one-time legal counsel, and Taylor, a former political director, in that probe.
But with senators of both parties already concerned about the constitutionality of the administration's efforts to root out terrorism suspects in the United States, the committee shifted to the broader question of Gonzales' stewardship of Justice and his willingness to go along with the wiretapping program.
The Bush administration secretly launched the spy program, run by the National Security Agency, in 2001 to monitor international phone calls and e-mails to or from the United States involving people the government suspected of having terrorist links. The program, which did not require investigators to seek warrants before conducting surveillance, was revealed in December 2005.
After the program was challenged in court, Bush put it under the supervision of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, established in 1978. The president still claims the power to order warantless spying.
Debate continues over whether the program violates people's civil liberties, and the administration has gone to great lengths to keep it running with extensive presidential discretion.
Piquing the committee's interest was vivid testimony last month by former Deputy Attorney General James Comey about the extent of the White House's effort to override the Justice Department's objections to the program in 2004.
Comey told the Judiciary Committee that Gonzales, then-White House counsel, tried to get Attorney General John Ashcroft to reverse course and recertify the program. At the time, Ashcroft lay in intensive care, recovering form gall bladder surgery.
Ashcroft refused, as did Comey, to whom Ashcroft had temporarily shifted the power of his office during his illness.
The White House recertified the program unilaterally. Ashcroft, Comey, FBI Director Robert Mueller and their staffs prepared to resign. Bush ultimately relented and made changes to the classified program that the Justice officials had demanded, and the agency eventually recertified it.
The fight was one of the most bitter disputes of the Bush presidency and questions remain over whether the program tramples people's civil liberties. The administration says the program is crucial to preventing more terrorist attacks.
Fratto defended the surveillance program as "lawful" and "limited."
"It's specifically designed to be effective without infringing Americans' civil liberties," Fratto said. "The program is classified for a reason — its purpose is to track down and stop terrorist planning. We remain steadfast in our commitment to keeping Americans safe from an enemy determined to use any means possible — including the latest in technology — to attack us."
Justice Department spokesman Dean Boyd said the subpoena to Gonzales is under review and that the department recognizes Congress' oversight role.
"We must also give appropriate weight to the confidentiality of internal executive branch deliberations," he said.
Majority Democrats and some Republicans are skeptical and have sought to find out more details about the program and how it has been administered.
Leahy's panel is required to serve the subpoenas to specific people within the offices named. One is addressed to Gonzales, while the others are addressed to: David S. Addington, Cheney's chief of staff; White House Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten, V. Phillip Lago, executive secretary of the National Security Council - or "other custodian of records" in their offices.
The subpoenas themselves seek a wide array of documents on the program from the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks to the present. Among them are any documents that include analysis or opinions from Justice, the National Security Agency — which administers the program — the Defense Department, the White House, or "any entity within the Executive Branch" on the legality of the electronic surveillance program.

Sheriffs VS Developers

I'm really torn in my thoughts on this (but yknow I've been sitting in the tire store preparing a federal lawsuit for a few hours so .... could be I'm working out a good PEEVE and can't think along my usual left angles)

But, what the hell?? We ALL know that sheriff and developers are on the same team. Maybe this means that is not true in EVERY county but it definitely IS true in Hillsborough County and that's provable beyond a shadow of a sniggling doubt. Of course, they're getting away with murder so .... well, let's just see what happens when the PURRRfect storm meets the filth and slime. To my mind, the storms always clean up the world. Nothing more refreshing than seeing the world cleaned as long as no one is harmed by the winds and rain.

Anyway, this dickhead sheriff in Panama County: "It's not wrong for them to run, but it's not wrong for us to chase them either," said Sheriff Frank McKeithen, who created his Illegal Alien Task Force in April to target construction sites in this Florida Panhandle county."

He refers to allegedly illegal aliens in this instance:

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. - The sheriff's department has developed a remarkably effective — and controversial — (i'll say) way of catching illegal immigrants: Deputies in patrol cars pull up to a construction site in force, and watch and see who runs.
Those who take off are chased down and arrested on charges such as trespassing, for cutting through someone else's property, or loitering, for hiding out in someone's yard, or reckless driving, for speeding off in a car.
U.S. immigration authorities are then given the names of those believed to be in this country illegally.
