Florida's Flag? Confederate REDUX??

Another of those things that are NOT my imagination because I confirmed it yesterday ....

As recently as five years ago, Florida's not-so-pretty Confederate-leaning flag DID NOT fly over Tampa and Hillsborough County area schools. NOW, it does. Kinda along the same time that the American flag started being MANDATED in every college classroom. Rampant nationalism.

This smacks of STATE-ism, and, I may be coining a new phrase. Worse, it smacks of CLOSET HATRED.

Oddly enough, as much as I have grown to respect most of the members of Florida Progressive Coalition, the fact they used the ugly Florida flag as a symbol nearly caused me to brush them off. I DO NOT LIKE the Florida flag and I think it has a very Confederate-like appearance.

Thought it was just me. Because, as you know while I'm not being nearly murdered, WITH CHILDREN;by friends of Sheriff Gee on the Interstate (as someone else in my family WAS carwrecked and maybe several someones, already) I have friends of every possible stripe. I'm perfectly aware that there are some AWESOME people who truly feel connected by deep prideful history to the Confederate flag and they do not use it as a hate symbol, or because they don't like dark people or for any other putrid reason. They LOVE IT like I love the American flag. I DO NOT love the American flag to exclusion of common sense. I love it because it's beautiful. I'd burn that piece of cloth right in front of Bush if given the chance. No problem. This is America; that's MY RIGHT.

Okay, covered all of that AND pissed Bill Nelson off. Great sentence, eh?

Anyway, I'm VERY TROUBLED by the fact that the Florida flag is hoisted over Tampa's schools, currently and that motivated me to find out why it bothers me.

Because, ABSOLUTELY there are those in Tampa and in Florida and in GA AL TN NC SC etc... who DO use that Confederate flag in a HATE WAR that some of them perpetrate to keep some of us from looking at them too hard. Believing that we GIVE A FUCK what they do provided they're not trying to murder us and our family 22 out of 24 hours of the day. EVERY DAY. Not sure what they do with the other two hours. Presumably have meetings at which they make each other feel taller or ballsier. Something. Because dumping paraplegics, running women and children over with your dumptrucks and breaking the arms of tiny women and yanking other small women around by their hair can't be leaving one feeling very manly OR womanly ....

SO, I did some research in to what smacks of similarity to the Confederate flag and damnnit ONCE AGAIN, it's NOT JUST ME.

Enough people think this way that it made it into Wiki. (and yes, noted I do not consider wiki the best source)

The Confederate States of America used several flags during its existence from 1861 to 1865. Since the end of the American Civil War, personal and official use of Confederate flags, and of flags derived from these, has continued under considerable controversy. Currently the state flags of Mississippi and Georgia draw heavily upon Confederate flag designs, and those of Arkansas, Alabama, Florida and Tennessee arguably incorporate certain elements from these designs.

Charlie and Jeb just LERVE posing in front of that big ''St. Andrew's Cross" which looks SUSPICIOUSLY confederate AND what in THE HELL does the St Andrew's Cross have to do with Florida????

Well, apparently: NOTHING. It's just more bullshit to bring the Confederate flag BACK OUT OF THE BASEMENTS AND GARAGES and, by god get it BACK ON THOSE PICKUP TRUCKS. (sorry, I used to have a pickup truck, too and don't pretend you don't know what I mean)

it has been erroneously described since the latter part of the 19th century as a cross, specifically a Saint Andrew's Cross. This folk legend sprang from the memoirs of an aging Confederate officer published in 1893. According to Coski, the Saint Andrew's Cross had no special place in Southern iconography at the time, and if Miles had not been eager to conciliate the Southern Jews his flag would have used the traditional Latin, Saint George's Cross. A colonel named James B. Walton submitted a battle flag design essentially identical to Miles' except with an upright Saint George's cross, but Beauregard chose the diagonal cross design.[16]
Specifically, the St. Andrew's Cross is a white saltire on a blue field, as in the national flag of Scotland. The St. Patrick's Cross, as in the state flag of Alabama, is a red saltire on a white field. The Army of Northern Virginia battle flag has a blue saltire on a red field and is, therefore, neither the St. Andrew's nor the St. Patrick's Cross but a saltire as in the proposed but unadopted Second National flag.
Miles' flag, and all the flag designs up to that point, were rectangular ("oblong") in shape. General Johnston suggested making it square instead. Johnston also specified the various sizes to be used by different types of military units. Beauregard agreed to this and soon prototypes were made by
Hetty Cary and her sister and cousin. On November 28, 1861, the Army of Northern Virginia (which was then called the Army of the Potomac) assembled and formally received the first set of new battle flags. Beauregard gave a speech encouraging the soldiers to treat this new flag with honor and that it must never be surrendered. Many soldiers wrote home about the ceremony and the impression the flag had upon them, the "fighting colors" boosting morale after the confusion of the first Battle of Bull Run. From that point on, the battle flag only grew in its identification with the Confederacy and the South in general.[17]

Just doesn't seem very healthy TO ME to be flying this heavily Confederate-like symbol over the schools of our beloved children.

I HAVE to assume this was JEB's idea BUT, I've seen MUCH MORE evidence of it in the VERY SHORT time that Charlie has been governor.

AND, I have to wonder. WHY is Charlie ALMOST ALWAYS pictified with the Confederate Florida flag close by??

I don't remember that with any other governor.

Is there yet ANOTHER agenda afoot here??

Let's see, George Bush divides us off from the world.

His brother JEbby divides Florida OFF from the country !

Now, we're seeing RAMPANT STATE-ism.

How long will it be before the BORDER CHECK from state to state ??

Maybe that's what will finally happen at all those weigh-stations you see along the highways.

I'm telling you, it's freaky to drive by schools and see all the flags flying ....

This should be about ALL THE PROOF you need that every word on my blog and the ENDLESS VIDEO I have of the stalking done by Tampa Police, Tampa FIre Dept and the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, up to, and INCLUDING shutting off entire sections of interstate while I drive through and arresting my family members with no cause .. is TRUE.Or else it's mighty odd that the interstates happened to get shut down coincidentally right in front of me EVERY NIGHT for weeks.Sue Eisman: I'm sorry for the loss of your beloved son.Pretty much they harassed my family member TO DEATH.When they had him there at age 17 (when the other thief was still in charge) they placed him in a cell with HUGE HUGE MEN. He weighed about 125 and was in a cell with three hundred pound gangsters.Yes, welcome to Tampa. THe Hotel California of the Deep South. It's not just HIllsborough, it's pinellas, pasco and deep connections to North Carolina where they go to retire.Or if you read the trib regularly you see that many Tampa firefighters actually LIVE in NC but work here in Tampa. Just not so much.Love seeing them caught in the act.Gee is a wily one. He understands that apologizing is helpful. He's insincere but chose his words well.Don't back DOWN, Mr. Sterner. Don't do it. Get WAY MORE than an apology. They're trying to harass and intimidate and/or murder my family right out of Florida and our property. And, don't forget when they leave the sheriff's dept they marry south tampa 'socialites' .....Please make THE CONNECTION.

AND close off entire sections of downtown.
And bury developers who are 'friends of the family'.
Gee, I can't imagine why the sheriff's dept would participate in stalking the owner of a valuable property considering they are best buds with developers? Can anyone help me figure that out???
I'm puzzled.Oh, maybe it's the gambling connection not the DEVELOPER connection.Have your bud jason renew his business license. It lapsed in December 2007 yet he has the small business of the year award from WHERE ELSE?CIty of Pampa home of the cranes.

TAMPA - Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee offered an apology today to the man dumped out of his wheelchair by a jail deputy.
The apology was part of a statement Gee released addressing the incident Jan. 29 in the Orient Road Jail booking room where cameras recorded Detention Deputy Charlette Marshall-Jones raising a wheelchair and tipping out inmate Brian Sterner, 32, who had been brought to the jail on a traffic violation related warrant.

Photo from jail video
"I want to assure Mr. Brian Sterner, as well as the citizens of Hillsborough County, that this incident will be investigated to the fullest," Gee said. "I am personally embarrassed and shocked by the horrific treatment [he] received. I cannot and will not even try to offer an explanation for what is seen on the video, other than to say, that once it was brought to my attention, I immediately initiated an internal investigation.
Gee went on to say the incident was not caused by a lack of training or procedure.
"It represents aberrant behavior that is totally out of context with policies, practices and standards of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office," he said.
Last year, more than 72,000 inmates were processed through the booking center, and more than 230 of them came to jail in wheelchairs, Gee said.
"I offer my personal apology to Mr. Sterner for the treatment that he received while being processed through Central Booking," Gee said. "I want to assure him, and the public at large, that this incident is not indicative of the behavior of the over 3,500 men and women of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office who perform their duties with pride and professionalism on a daily basis."
The deputy in question told News Channel 8 she is confident she will be redeemed.
"I feel positive," Hillsborough County Detention Deputy Charlette Marshall-Jones said in a telephone interview this morning. "When I know I'm not wrong, I feel that way. … I do believe the truth will come out, but I can't offer more than that."
Marshall-Jones was suspended on Monday without pay after a video of her emptying Brian Sterner, 32, out of a wheelchair to the floor in Orient Road Jail was released.
Three of her supervisors were suspended with pay pending the outcome of an investigation.
Cpl. Steve Dickey, who is seen smiling on the video, declined to talk about the investigation.
"All I can say is I was not there during the incident," he said. "I did not view the incident."
Sheriff David Gee will refer the case of a man dumped out of a wheelchair by a detention deputy Jan. 29 to the state attorney's office, attorney John Trevena told NBC's "Today" show this morning.
Trevena said he talked to Gee on Tuesday night about the incident.
Sterner told "Today" that one thing that could help set things right would be for Gee to apologize to him personally.
"The next thing that could happen is the state's attorney could get involved, and then the attorney could get involved, and then Charlie Crist could get involved, and then somebody else that leads this country could get involved," Sterner said. "Because it's not about one deputy; it's not about a sheriff; and it's not about a governor."
Sterner landed on his ribs and then rolled over on his back Jan. 29 while Hillsborough County Detention Deputy Charlette Marshall-Jones checked his pockets before she and another deputy put him back in the chair.
The moments were recorded by cameras in Orient Road Jail. The video has repulsed many and resulted in the suspension of Marshall-Jones, a deputy with 22 years on the job, and three of her supervisors.
"I think these type of things occur fairly routinely, and it's only when you have unequivocal evidence like this that something can happen about it," Trevena said on "Today."
Sterner said the incident isn't about race or a wheelchair.
"Just like Rodney King got beat on the street and I got thrown out my wheelchair, it happens to people every day," Sterner said. "It's just now there's cameras that catch it."
Sterner can drive a car, but he hasn't been able to walk for 14 years.
He said he told Marshall-Jones as much when he was booked into jail on a traffic-related charge.
She didn't believe him, he said.
Gee said he was at a loss for words after viewing the video.
"This was not a training issue," Gee said late Tuesday. "It's a human decency issue. I can't imagine any explanation she might have.
"It's like being a blackjack dealer in Vegas," the sheriff said of the surveillance system. "I put those cameras in there for a reason. They're to protect the deputies as much as the suspects who are brought in."
Deputies arrested Sterner on a warrant from Tampa police at his home in Riverview. He posted bail and was freed Feb. 3.
Gee is in Jacksonville at a Florida Sheriff's Association meeting, leaving Chief Deputy Jose Docobo in command.
After watching the tape Monday, Docobo ordered Marshall-Jones to be immediately suspended without pay, he said. Three of her supervisors who were visible on the tape also were suspended with pay.
'Indefensible At Every Level'
"The actions are indefensible at every level," Docobo said. "Based on what I saw, anything short of dismissal would be inappropriate."
Trevenasaid he wants Marshall-Jones charged with felony battery and for her supervisors to be disciplined and to undergo mandatory retraining so this kind of incident is not repeated.
"I'm embarrassed, professionally and personally," the sheriff said Tuesday. "I can't offer an explanation."
An internal affairs investigation is reviewing the actions by Jones and the three supervisors: Cpl. Decondra Williams, 36; Dickey, 45; and Sgt. Gary Hinson, 51. Investigators had not interviewed the deputy or her supervisors as of Tuesday, Docobo said.
No reports were filed about the incident, so investigators are trying to determine what the supervisors knew, Docobo said. Each of the three appears at various times on the video, but none intervenes with Marshall-Jones. Dickey walks into the frame from the side and appears to smile as he walks away.
"That none of the supervisors acted upon what they saw is of great concern," Docobo said. "This is not the norm at the sheriff's office. It's an aberration."
Phone messages left for Marshall-Jones and Hinson got no immediate response. A number could not be found for Williams.
Dickey declined to comment on the investigation when reached by telephone. He is president of the Hillsborough detention deputies' chapter of the West Florida Police Benevolent Association, the union that represents deputies.
There are more than 30 other inmates in jail who use wheelchairs, and their special needs are nothing new to the department, Docobo said.
The sheriff's office has a policy to comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act. It also requires "an intake nurse to assess inmates upon admission for evidence of a disability or special management need."
Sterner has been without the use of his legs since a wrestling accident in 1994, he said. He has no feeling below his sternum and has partial use of his arms. Trevena says his client is classified as quadriplegic.
Sterner has been a wheelchair rugby player and has a master's degree in philosophy from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash. He was director of the Florida Spinal Cord Injury Resource Center for about four years until 2006, he said. In January, he was laid off from a job selling wheelchair vans, Sterner said.
Problem Started With Traffic Ticket
He drives a Mini Cooper outfitted with hand controls. On Oct. 25, Tampa police ticketed him, saying he blocked an intersection, court records show. He later was charged with a third-degree felony of fleeing to elude an officer in connection with the same incident.
Trevena called the felony charge questionable. "He made no attempt to evade," Trevena said. "He made one turn and stopped."
On Jan. 12, Sterner was ticketed again. The citation says he unknowingly was driving with a suspended license, meaning he didn't know his license was suspended, Trevena said. He wasn't arrested then because the felony warrant had not been filed.
A deputy arrived at his Riverview home on Jan. 29 to serve the warrant.
Sterner was brought into the booking room in a wheelchair owned by the jail. Marshall-Jones ordered him to stand, Sterner said. He told her he couldn't.
"She was irked that I wasn't complying to what she was telling me to do," he said. "It didn't register with her that she was asking me to do something I can't do."
Sterner said he thought he had suffered two cracked ribs, but it turned out to be bruising, Trevena said. An X-ray showed no fractures.
Marshall-Jones offered no apologies, Sterner said. "Not one word."
He was released five days later after posting $2,000 bail, records show.
Sterner said his stay was made even more humiliating when he had a bowel accident and was left to sit in his waste for three or four hours until a staff member helped him clean up.
Joseph DiDomenico of Self Reliance, a nonprofit organization that helps people with disabilities live independently, said he was disgusted by what happened to Sterner. DiDomenico said Sterner was a client several years ago.
"He could've been hurt," he said. "The longer you're a quadriplegic, the more brittle your bones become. It stunned me."
Along with the appearance on "Today," Sterner will be on CNN and the syndicated news magazine "Inside Edition" to talk about the treatment he received, Trevena said.
Trevena said the sheriff's office "seems to be headed in the right direction" by offering an apology for Marshall-Jones' actions but that his client deserves more.
"When she's arrested, then I'll believe they're serious about it," he said.

Some wanted to view a record on Brian. Note he has no prior record.
Jones should have been fired as soon as the video surfaced. She isn't the only maniac working there though.......far from it.
They made this man pay a bond adding insults to what they'd already done.
Jones often answers the phone in booking. 813 247-8300 jail813 247-8000. Now is the time to not just post about this but to speak out very loudly. This is the most sadistic thing I think I've seen on Tbo.com The officer should not only be fired, but charged with assault and attempted Murder as anyone with a Broken Neck could risk death if being thrown to the grown like that as their nerves and spinal chords are much more Fragile. If I'm an attorney I'm recommending he be charged with attempted murder. This is absolutely disgusting and the worst kind of treatment. This makes me wanna vomit all over the keyboard... HCSO is such a Joke!!! They need to make an example out of this officer NOW! David Gee needs to man up and charge this officer with everything that can be thrown at him. What a pathetic POS

First thing they should all be fired. The three other people in the clip all watched and did nothing to help.
Second they should all be charged with a hate crime. The man was white and theother officers were all black.
I can just imagine what would happen if the man was black.

Brian Sterner was a philosophy instructor (locally) and I was one of his students a few years back. He made it a point to include stories of his struggle with disability into his curriculum and even encouraged his students to spend an entire day in a wheelchair to see the world in his shoes and of others who are disabled. Having Brian as a philosophy instructor definately taught me that even with disabilities, people can be powerful with their minds and words, and in the end we are all human.
Having seen this story on the news definately disturbs me. As I remember Brian Sterner as an inspirational person, and seeing someone (especially a person of the law) mistreat him in a de-humanizing way disgusts me.
I am happy to see that Brian came unscathed from this event, and there were no serious injuries. I wish Brian the best of luck and hope that some will get a good lesson from this.

Looking at the reactions of the other officers it is apparent that this was not out of the ordinary. Just another day at the office. No one looked surprised. In my oppinion all that appear in this video should be terminated and miss jones should be brought up on charges. O.K. lets hear from the bleading hearts about how police officers put there lives on the line every day blaw blaw blaw. This kind of crap goes on every day. Not all police officers are sadistic SOBs like this lady obviously is. It's people like this who give the rest of hard working police officers a bad reputation. The officers who did this should be ashamed of themselves. If they had any decency left in them (which I sincerely doubt), they would resign and apologize to this victim. I hope that the department fires them all and donates their pensions to a charity for the handicapped. They've disgraced their uniforms and forgotten the meaning of "To Protect and Serve".

Must be a new technique for body searching a quadriplegic or maybe she told him on the ground and he wouldn't comply. Looks like they need to fire more than just 4 officers. I bet she has been dumping quads for 22 years off camera because she did not look suprised when he didn't walk away and her and her partner have had previous experince in quad search, a technique she has developed in her 22 years of public service. He will get money, she will be trained in the proper search of a quad and get her job back. Cameras will be reaimed,so we can not see the dark side of life.

While others were able to use the phone, I was not, there was no TDY phone in booking, I asked the supervisor at the time to help with a phone call, that was denied, then once I was in a "Pod" I was told that they had a TDY phone by an inmate who was nice enough to write to me, since that was the only way I could communicate, anyway after 4 or 5 days, not being able to use the phone, not even knowing if my family knew what had happened to me, I was finally able to use the TDY phone, but get this, since the TDY phone was in a different POD, I had to be stripped searched before I left my pod, then strip searched again when I got to the new pod, then I was able to use the phone, then when I was done, I had to be strip searched again when I left that POD to go to my Pod, then strip searched again once I got back to my POD 4 times being strip searched for every phone call I was able to make, and only when the deputy would let me. Talk about humiliation. They say to look out for the people in jail, it's not those who are arrested, you have to look out for the Deputy's there, they are so mean. I have never been arrested before and did not know the rules, and being deaf I was just so lost, no one would help me at all. It was very traumatic for me, all over driving while my license was suspended without knowledge.

They are all awful disgusting people, I know from being there, the other deputy's didn't looked surprised because they weren't, this happens all the time but nobody says anything about it because they don't think anyone would listen to them because the way they treat you there is just like an animal, they are mean and nasty, and let's not forget you are innocent until proven guilty, they treat everyone the same, they treat you like you are the scum of the earth. More people should speak up about the mistreatment at that jail, I know I was mistreated, I did file a complaint, but of course, nothing happened.

Neither the comments on this site nor the video tape of the incident speak to the person, the professional I know Deputy Marshall-Jones to be. I cannot say anything to excuse the behavior demonstrated on this tape, but I can say that it is NOT representative of her as a person or a professional. Like all of us, this could have been a result of the pressures of a bad day, week or whatever; it could have been the result of her giving into the expectations of the other officers around her, but from personal experience, I am confident that the Sheriff will recognize that this was just a momentary lapse in judgment and not her normal behavior. If none of us had such moments in our own lives, Mr. Sterner would have never ended up there and quite frankly, there would be no need for such facilities. No matter what you saw on the video, Deputy Marshall-Jones is one of the best in that facility. I pray that Sheriff Gee doesn't buy into all of the outrageous demands made by many of the people of this site. He properly disciplined all officers involved, but I pray that he takes this incident and measures it against the sum total of her service to the County and then makes his decision.

Ok, these are PUBLIC officials correct? Is it not our tax dollars that pay their salaries? I don't care what kind of day she was having, this is absolutely horrible. It's not like you can defend yourself if you are being mistreated in jail. You just have to take it, until you are released, and hope then you can get justice. It wasn't like the arrestee was a murderer, it was a traffic citation. I will tell you this: If I was to go to work and have a bad day, and treat someone else this way, I would be fired on the spot. The same should apply here, PERIOD. The more we allow our public officials to intrude into our rights, the more they will continue to do it. It has to stop somewhere, and firing this deputy may make a good start!

If the same set of supervisors are responsible for handling complaints against her as they are for handling incident reports and use of force reports then I say that they have already proven to be negligent in their duties.

All I have to say is, there is more video than the 3 second clip you see on this website. Remember the Largo PD officer and the old lady. Lots of people had to eat their words about that one. Lets not completely rush to judgment. None of you have any idea of what may have led up to this happening. None of you have probably ever worked in that environment, or anyone where all you hear is how bad, evil, and horrible you are, just because you wear a uniform. These people go to work everyday knowing that they may not go home the way they came in. Weapons, drugs, and all sorts of things get smuggled into facilities like the jail via wheelchairs and disabled folks. Believe me, I know. I worked in this field. There may not be an excuse that exonerates dumping this man out of the wheelchair, but he is probably not completely innocent in this. Hey Trib, do more background and investigative work into this. Request and watch the whole video, not just the 3 seconds shown.

This most disturbing video is more then enough evidence to support a termination of those involved. I would make one exception, if one of those other three deputies came forward with a complaint prompting the release of the video. If not, then all of them must be terminated for this disgusting display of disrespect for a human being.
My understanding is there was no report filed by any deputy witnessing. It was made public only after a reporter obtained a copy of the surveillance video. If that is true, then my tax dollars are being wasted paying for these four salaries! Criminal charges are also warranted and should be filed by the State Attorney!
The Sheriff must do the right thing and remove the current leadership managing his jail. There is an obvious culture of unprofessional conduct rampant inside the Hillsborough County jail. Management is responsible and must be held accountable. If you require proof, the fact the deputy had no previous disciplinary issues prior to this incident is all the proof required. I can assure you her conduct did not just happen this one time!
Sheriff Gee, you know what needs to be done, step up and get it done. This must never happen again, the public has lost trust in your leadership at the jail. Change it! I also hope other Sheriff’s and Police Chiefs are paying close attention. Law Enforcement has a very important role in society. Those who abuse their sworn oath must be removed from their ranks.

These individuals passing themselves off as authority figures are nothing more than guttertrash with no honor, no ethics, and no value to the Human Species. Not only the guttertrash committing the act, not only the guttertrash standing watching, but the guttertrash walking by laughing.
Not only should they all be dishonorably discharged WITHOUT pay, but they should be made to pay back all past income received from working as officers of the law. They should be criminally charged with a Hate Crime and/or conspiracy to commit a Hate Crime.
And were I truly as dishonorable and unethical and sadistic as they are, I would encourage the court to include among their sentencing the brutal, unsedated smashing of their legs and arms with sledgehammers to the point of being unrepairable.
Someone commented that they knew the officer who committed the act and that it wasn't like her to do this. Duh! It's right there! If it wasn't like her, why was there no suprised reaction by the other officers? Why was it treated so casual and even treated as being funny? Simple: It IS common for her, and perhaps others, to act like the dishonorable, unethical guttertrash that they are. What are you going to do next? Blame video games or TV violence for her actions?

The Officer's actions are inexcusable. She should be fired. Unfortunately many police officers think they are the judge jury and executioner vs. public servants. Sheriff Gee needs to reassure the public that his office has a protocol for managing individuals with disabilities or medical concerns. I agree with the person who commented that this arrest and abuse seem way out of proportion for a traffic infraction. People who hate lawyers need to realize that lawyers are the people who take actions that result in change. They protect those who need it and force people to take responsibility for their actions.

I really believe they would not have made this public, and like someone said, it was just caught on video, I think some reporter should review all the tapes of what goes on at the admissions desk. I am surpirsed too she didn't handcuff him with hands behind his back. Was she the aressting officer? Or was she just processing him for entry? I feel that Marshall-Jones should be charged with felony battery and anything else that that would/could go along with what she's done to Mr. Sterner. The other deputies should be charged as accomplices. The West Fla. Police Benevolent Association should make a public statement and fire Dickey from his position as president. Next time I receive a call to make a donation--I'll have no problem telling them with officers they keep in the position as a president that do what this man did--to laugh and walk away and DO NOTHING TO HELP THIS MAN OR STOP THIS WOMAN--you can forget any donation from me. Why isn't Marshall-Jones in jail already?! Because she's an officer of the law?!! Guess what--she VIOLATED THE LAW--therefore, like anyone that violates the law--she should be in jail and having to post her own bond!!! I just watched the entire video of this incident for almost three minutes and agree that this jail has a real problem with their employees. It is posssible that criminal charges will be filed in this case and I doubt that this man will have to worry about finding a job in the future once the taxpayers pay him and his attorney after he files the inevitable lawsuit.
The first thing I would do if I were responsible for the jails, is put cameras everywhere. I assume these officers were aware that were being recorded, but either were too stupid to care or just totally oblivious and lacking even a modicum of common sense.
Second, all the individuals on the tape who were aware of this guard's actions toward this man and did nothing, should also be suspended wihout pay.
Third, with all the terrible crimes we read about daily and offenders who seem to walk around for years with outstanding warrants committing more serious crimes without being picked up, why was so much attention given to this particular traffic offender? Everything about the charges filed against him and the events leading to his arrest seem very suspicious. The Tampa Tribune should take a look at how decisions such as these are made and what the community can do to ensure that law enforcement prioritizes scarce resources in order to maximize the protection of the public. Something about the charges and arrest which led to this fiasco is not making sense and the Tribune is in the best position to get some answers.

This isnt the first incident and some are warrented if you ask me, but come on a quad and this horrific display of cruelty. I believe this deputy needs to be fired and then everyone else would know to straighten up or you know your fate. I dont ever believe in racism but I do have to question what would happen if the races were reversed. Our sheriffs should bring charges on this deputy, if a citizen had done this on the road, then they would have been charges there is no difference. And as for he shouldnt have been there, come on a Traffic Offense, that is hardly a man who is a horrible criminal. I hope he gets the best attorney in town because he certainly will win the lottery with any jury if it goes that far. I'm sure there will be an out of court settlement for a large winfall amount.
The woman who did this probably was having a bad day/night. I have to at least try to think of some reason for her to act so inhumane towards another person. However, it was an error in judgement that she should never have the opportunity to make again. She must be terminated immediately and never be trusted with the care, custody or control of any other human being or animal. She should be ordered to attend counseling also since there's obviously some "issues" there. Perhaps even from too many years on the job.

FIRST- I will say that what this woman did was awful and there is NO excuse for it!!
BUT- I can't stand how everyone is saying that it is Sheriff Gee's fault that this happened. He IS taking his department more seriously and taking the necessary steps to improve the quality of people who are acceptable for the job. Apparently nobody takes the time to read the positive stories on here...
This past November, the 2nd class of new recruits went through the Sheriff's Office's new "S.O.T." training which is modeled after the Marines bootcamp. This is now required to every single new recruit to Hillsborough County, regardless of if they have worked for another department. The new deputies are earning boat loads of respect for going through this training, as we are the ONLY department in Florida who has something like this. It is no longer a matter of filling out an application, getting a background check and going through a few classes to become a deputy. Nobody would go through this if they weren't serious about truly making a difference in the community.
That being said... it is the UNION who thinks that this new training process is a waste of money. The SOT process serves several purposes. It bonds the new recruit class, it weeds out the weak and weak minded, and it also SAVES money. Between the only two classes that have made it through, 24 people dropped out. HCSO would have spent THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS of dollars on these people for them to complete the academy (which now comes after SOT rather than just after the application process). Instead, they nip it in the butt from the beginning and realize the job just isn't for them.
So yes, the older deputies have sort of been grandfathered in... But the future of HCSO is so bright. It is unfair to blame the Sheriff for something that a deputy, who has 22 years in the department, has done. He wasn't the Sheriff when she was hired and/or trained and I'm almost certain that she will be fired when he gets back in town.
He is making this department one of the most respected around... but its not something that can happen over night.

I too was arrested for driving with a a suspended license w/o knowledge.AS I was being released going through the exit I asked how much longer I had to use the restroom, no attitude or disrespect, just needed to use the bathroom. Told to go when I got home.
The officer kept me in between walls of brick for 2 hours before opening the brick wall to release me. He said in an intercom " did you pee on yourself?" laughing!
I was like is this thug nation? I had no violent crime, acted in a respectful and professional manner. He watched me to see if I would go to the bathroom on myself.
That part was worse than being arrested. The cruelty and sadist nature was more damming.

Anyone who abuses someone in their care under the color of authority should be fired, and charged criminaly. Period. And for those that didn't bother to read the article before you started to type your bile, even the Chief Deputy stated those involved should be dismissed..this is going to be taken seriously, if not, that video tape would have never made it out to the public. All of you "cop bashers" please remember one very important point: The employees at the jail ARE NOT law enforcement officers...they do not work on the street, and this should not reflect anything except problems within the corrections system..same type of problems everywhere, even where I live in Virginia. Just quit confusing corrections officers (formally they were called jail guards or turnkeys)with law enforcement officers. And no, I'm not an LEO or a jail guard..just someone who can read and react without emotion or bias...........

This is repulsive. She along with the others that stood there and did nothing should all be without a job right now! You see in the news almost everyday another so called "peace officer" abusing their power(ie the officer in Baltimore berating a 14 year old). But this is absolutley disgusting! If she is not charged with assault or something this will truly hurt the already pathetic reputation of our sherrif's department and cops in general! HCSO should be ashamed! These days there are just as many thug, POS in law enforcement as there are locked up.

Hate crimes (also known as bias motivated crimes) occur when a perpetrator targets a victim because of his or her membership in a certain social group, usually defined by race, religion, sexual orientation, disability, ethnicity, nationality, age, gender, gender identity, or political affiliation.
I just wanted to point out that hate crime does not only mean race. You could argue that it was a hate crime based on the fact that he was in a wheel chair.
That being said, I didn't get the impression that this was a hate crime. It looked like she just didn't care at all. I do agree that the double standard totally sucks, but calling this a hate crime is probably a stretch.
Crime? yes! If I did this to the man while passing him on the street, I'd certainly get arrested and charged. I'm all for her getting fired and charged! But I don't see this as a hate crime... Just didn't see anything that told me she wouldn't treat anyone the same way.

AS shown in the video Deputy Thug's actions were funny to them!
I was in for a misdemeanor and proven innocent later thank God!
While waiting to post bond I watched a woman having a grand mal seizure in the middle of the room. Many of us went up to the desk to report. They told us she was a drunk! Finally two men took her into the mens bathroom.
I never saw her come back out.
Like the woman above said about her son, many die in their hands, they have no tolerance for medical conditions.
IF this had happened in my company we'd be sued and held criminally accountable.

Hate might be a motive, but not a crime category. Now if they created a statute for Aggravated Stupidty, to add to a list of charges, I'm all for that!

She danced at my wedding, and the band skipped, she has little deputies orbiting around her belt, a belt she puts on with a boomerang. I'm upset that we taxpayers continue to pay the salary of the three officers that watched this and did not intervene nor file a report. OK, give them the benefit of the doubt, and conduct an investigation, but they should at least have to take personal days (vacation time) if they want to continue to be paid. They should not get additonal paid time off as a "punishment" for this situation. Write your County Commissioner and tell him/her that if they and Sheriff Gee want to pay these guys they are more than welcome to pay them out of their own pockets, but I for one don't agree to allowing my tax dollars to be used that way.

KM13, you don't see a problem with civilian police being trained in the same fashion as our military? You do realize one of the reasons we have such problems between the public and law enforcement is because the police force is being militarized right? These types of Marine training course and Marine mentallity are not condusive to good police work.

It is two weeks of that type of training to get rid of those who can't cut it. After that, they spend 6 months at the academy and then another 2 in what they call modules.
My point is... Gee is trying to build a department that we can be proud of. He knows there are bad Deputies out there and he's doing what he can to make sure they don't slip through anymore.

I want to remark on two issues raised here. The first is the concept of this SOT training. Politicalmike has it right in his observation that the militarization of police is not a good thing. They should be two different types of tools that society uses in different kinds of situations. Besides, SOT is little more than putting these guys through a tough course of physical conditioning and getting yelled at all day by a goob in a wide brimmed hat. I don't see how that training better equips officers to interact with the community.
Several people raised the issue of why time was spent arresting this guy on a minor traffic warrant when more serious criminals have long-standing warrants. Well, this guy was easy to find and posed no threat to the officer making the arrest...so he gets a tick mark on his fitness report for serving a warrant, and didn't really have to work too hard to do it. Gets you the same tick mark on your report whether its a real bad you had to track down, or a minor scofflaw posing no physical threat.
Not all that long ago Police Officers were respected members of the community, but along the way they seem to have forgotten the part about being a part of the community, and programs like SOT take that from them. They try to demand respect, like the Baltimore officer, but respect doesn't work that way...and we now see all these instances of police abusing the trust and authority we grant them, and they wonder why their word no longer carries weight in court, and why citizens no longer offer the respect and support they used to enjoy.
Yes society has changed, and it may be tougher to be a cop, but we don't have a draft for the job. They go into law enforcement because they want to. If they want the respect of their community, they have to earn it, and when other officers act so as to reflect badly on the whole profession, they are better served if they report that officer, rather than laughing and walking away as the other three officers did in this situation. That further damages respect for the profession as a whole. That's what they don't seem to understand.

This is not an isolated incident. Last year at Gasparilla the police arrested a woman who was trying to report a rape for a bogus outstanding warrant. When they took her to the notorious HC jail, the jailers refused to give her the meds which had been prescribed for her to prevent pregnancy. The federal government should be involved and prosecute the jail officers for violation of this disabled person's civil rights. The smug and intolerant attitude of the HCSO towards women, gays, blacks, and now the disabled, (anyone but the good ole boys) is legendary.Yes, he will probably win a big settlement which will sweep this under the rug. As taxpayers, we will be the ones paying the bill. I would rather my tax dollars be spent on the prosecution and incarceration of those involved in this disgraceful incident, which is all too common.Lots of us have stressful jobs but we are not allowed to take it out on those we work for or with. If the County Commissioners want to know where they can make some budget cuts, I suggest they start here.

nuthnfiner - SOT is not only bootcamp style yelling at each other. I understand that is what they showed on the news... but there was a lot more to it than that. It is not designed to teach them how to interact with people in the community... it is only two weeks long and that cannot be learned in just two short weeks. That is what the academy is for. SOT is so that the recruit class can form a bond and learn to trust one another. After all, these guys will be the ones who are called on each other and could potentially save each other's lives.
There are SEVERAL units on dealing with disabled people throughout the academy. OBVIOUSLY this "dumping" is not policy and she made the wrong decision.

A number of posts in this thread note that police (et al) have to deal with the scum of society and should be given the benefit of the doubt concerning their interactions with the civilian population...Not so. Law enforcers of all kinds are (supposed to be) public servants charged with the responsibility for sustaining a civilized society...As such, they have special powers and authorities; but holding such powers and authorities should require that law enforcers be held to higher standards than other public servants.
In most states, the Sheriff is the highest elected official in county government and his or her deputies hold great authority over private citizens. In most municipalities, the Chief of Police actually has legal powers and authorities that outweigh those of the Mayor, City Council or City Manager. Commissioned officers share those authorities and powers with the Chief.
Civilian oversight commissions, whose job it is to oversee law enforcer-citizen interactions, are generally toothless and ineffective; and often act as shills to cover law enforcer misbehavior.
The law enforcer establishment situation in this country is intolerable and must be changed so that law enforcers are held strictly accountable when they abuse, as they often do, their powers and authorities. Generally speaking, law enforcers must be presumed to be wrong when they use force -- and especially deadly force -- until they are proven to have acted correctly, morally and properly -- not just legally or within their department's rules of engagement.
The law enforcer tyranny has reached a state in which citizens have as much or more to fear from their 'protectors' as they do from the criminal element.
All charges of law enforcer abuse of citizens and, or misconduct, malfeasance and misfeasance should be referred to the highest prosecutor in the state for impartial investigation; and if warranted, prosecution to the greatest extent possible under law.

I'm all for good cops. I think that police behavior, given their authority, should be held to a higher standard than that of an ordinary citizen.
That behavior was CRIMINAL. There is no excuse for it. The fact that you can get into trouble with the police just for your tone of voice during a traffic stop, yet the criminality of this act is debated, just says to me the changes must be made.
It should start with the dismissal of all involved.

Next we will hear more BS excuses from her lawyer, or the police union rep that the video doesn't tell the whole story. Its gonna be the same old lip service.
If she did this once then more than likely she has done other things like this for the past 22 years.
She is a disgrace. The sad thing is the usual disciplinary action will probably happen. She will get a letter placed in her file, reassigned, and nothing else. We will continue to pay her salary and her nice little pension/benefits when she retires. Even if she does gets fired she won't lose her benefits and we will continue to pay for her acts for a long time to come.

Flip someone in a wheelchair, manhandle him, throw him back in the chair and you get paid leave? she will probably get Al sharpton, and Jesse to defend her!!They will trace his backround and find out his 7th grandpappy was a slave owner so she had every right to do this and win millions in reperation. then sue the reporter who made the tape public for defermation of her charicter.

Of all the problems we have in society, the police are most concerned with TRAFFIC WARRANTS? Obviously the motivation is revenue, not the safety and security of the citizens. Oddly enough all the revenue from traffic citations for the entire year will likely not cover the settlement this man will receive. Once again - those in a position of power have proven beyond a measure of doubt that they should not be in power.

She should be fired and arrested. PERIOD!!Its about time this jail was exposed for what it really is. The staff in this jail truly believe they are above the law.Felony charge of assault on a handicapped person is the LEAST they should do to this sorry excuse for a human being!!!!!!!!!!!!This is a racial hate crime. Like it was said above. If that was a white officer dumping a crippled black man on the floor we would have have Jesse Jackson and every other Black Civil Rights advocate raising holly h*ll and screaming bloody murder. There would be riots in the street, protests and marches of all kinds across the nation of epic proportions.But...since it was a black officer with a crime against a white handicapped man it will get its 5 seconds of "fame" and get swept under the rug in the blink of an eye as soon as the sheriffs office pays him off. Pity. This is a real and serious tragedy that needs to be prosecuted to the FULLEST EXTENT.

This whole damn thing is revolting. This only what we have seen on tape. What happens to people when there is no camera? I am more than angry about the others that went on about there business like this was a regular thing going on. Any time another waches this happen they are just as responsible. Maybe even more. For her to think what she did was alright and she is going to get off the hook speaks volumns for the kind of person she is. The crime she committed for out weighs a traffic ticket. This is a disgrace not only to someone who is disabled, but to every person who has ever been treated inappropriately by law enforcement. These officers do not deserve to have paid suspension, they deserve to be fired, and held accountable for their actions, just as any other person would. Being in law enforcement does not give you the right to get away with these types of actions. This is just another example of a corrupt system.

As a police officer for many years, I am absolutely repulsed by the actions of this deputy and the deputies who stood by and did nothing. It is imperative that she be fired and the other deputies should be given substantial suspensions. Many of us became police officers to protect and those who are officers to bully and abuse should be eliminated from the force. How can you stand by and watch something like this happen and not do anything? It is because this is not an unusual event for them and that is very disturbing.

Her supervisors stood by and did nothing. Now on paid suspension they are doing nothing and being paid for it. Sheriff Gee is adding insult to injury. This poor guy was abused by the deputy and supervisors. Now he wants to pay them for being assigned time off.
No wonder the "PROTECT AND SERVE " motto has been deleted from the HCSO web site. Gee's men don't PROTECT they ABUSE they don't SERVE they DISSERVE the residents of hillsbourgh county. They disserve the taxpayer.

I wish I could say that I am surprised, but I'm not. Based on my own experiences and firsthand observations, as well as the totally infuriating events covered in the media in the last year nothing anyone could tell me about American law enforcement would shock me.
My ex and I are both disabled, and what happened to us after we were stopped and searched based on nothing but racial profiling in Lincoln County TN in March of 2002 has left me with a total lack of trust for law enforcement. When they didn't find what they wanted to in the car of an interracial couple they just planted some crack there.
After being arrested we were denied our prescription medications, which was life threatening for both of us, and having been disowned by our families because of our relationship we were stuck in the county jail for days. When we finally got to see the judge we were both forced to plead guilty for something we didn't do in order to get out of jail. I had to go straight to the ER when I got out.
Had we have pleaded not guilty we would have been detained until we faced a jury and would then have had no defense other than our word against multiple Lincoln County and Fayetteville City law enforcement officers.
Being on fixed incomes we eventually became homeless while paying off court costs and probation fees. We lived in a tent in the National forest for a while before we went our separate ways.
A woman who graduated from high school with my parents took me in to live with her and her 85 year old mother.
Life has been challenging, but I can say that I have had two truly dedicated friends that I could depend on. I came to know the elderly lady as "Grandma," and had the honor of singing at her funeral last fall. I currently live with her daughter in her remaining estate.
Unfortunately, most who are victimized by corrupt law enforcement don't have a happy ending. It is high time that such monsters are brought to justice.

To the person above who posted a defence of her friend Deputy Marshall-Jones, who dumped this quadaplegic on the floor. The friend's comments are: "the person, the professional I know Deputy Marshall-Jones to be. ....I can say that it is NOT representative of her as a person or a professional. Like all of us, this could have been a result of the pressures of a bad day, week or whatever…but from personal experience, I am confident that the Sheriff will recognize that this was just a momentary lapse in judgment and not her normal behavior. If none of us had such moments in our own lives, Mr. Sterner would have never ended up there and quite frankly, there would be no need for such facilities. No matter what you saw on the video, Deputy Marshall-Jones is one of the best in that facility."
This friend says that if none of us had moments in our lives where there were "momentary lapses in judgment" there would be no need for a facility such as the jail.
Well, that is exactly where Deputy Marshall-Jones deserves to be: behind bars in jail, charged with assault and battery. I would like to see her behind bars for a long time. Why is it that government employees are held to a different standard than all other citizens? Why has this deputy not immediately been charged and booked for assault and battery?
If it were any person who was not an employee of the government, they would be immediately be put behind bars in jail.
Why the double standard for government employees? American citizens need to understand that the government in the US has grown far too big, expensive, powerful, tyrannical, and unaccountable. We need a major downsizing of the police, the jails, the end of jailing people for victimless crimes like non-violent drug possession. The prison-industrial complex is very profitable for the companies and employees that profit from taxpayer money put into this cesspool of a system. We need less victimless "crimes", less jails, less guards, less police, and MORE accountabilty of government employees.
The fact that this guard has not been immediately arrested and booked for assault and battery is the most serious outrage of all.

I am a person with a invisible disability who had my life destroyed for a very similar incident. This is far from an isolated case. The attitudes reflected by all the officers involved show the level of ignorance and bigotry towards person with disabilities throughout law enforcement. Despite paraplegics being severely injured by clueless cops (see the "Gorman" case in KC, among others), the cops never get anything but a slap on the wrist. Not only should disability sensitivity training be mandatory for every security personnel, but those who willfully injure or cover-up such abuse (like Marshall-Jones and Gee)should be jailed for no less than two years. Mere firings simply aren't enough to teach officers not to assume that every single person claiming disability is a malinger, abuser, or whiner.

I think this deputy should face charges of assault. If that were you or I, we certainly would be charged with assault. I do not care what she "thought", ALL citizens, with warrants or without should be treated with respect and given their dignity regardless of the charges, and everyone is innocent until proven guilty - not just this deputy, even though she asserts that right now after disregarding another citizen's right!
Video tape does not lie. Whether this man was truly handicapped or not, COMMON SENSE in anyone should cause them to avoid dumping someone out of a wheelchair - you don't need training to have common sense, and if you do, then you do not belong being employed as a deputy enforcing the laws of our fine state.
FIRE HER. CHARGE HER, and by doing so, make a statement that you cannot make a personal judgement about a citizen and then act AGAINST THE LAW, abusing the rights of other citizens based on your personal belief. Not even if they give you a hard time - she has no defense for this disgusting behavior. Those among her who were standing by allowing this to happen with no response, or worse, laughing, they too should be severely disciplined - let it be known that this is NEVER funny and it is never acceptable to stand by and allow it to happen, nor is it ever acceptable to fail to report it. Burn it into their minds so that they and everyone else employed as a law enforcement officer can never forget it - here and across the entire U.S.
I agree with jColes and most of the rest of those who say this was a crime against society - it needs to be handled as such. Maybe the law enforcement departments should teach respect to their officers - and quit allowing that the citizens they interact with are always criminals or dirtbags.
Either that, or quit being amazed that normal citizens would rather carry guns, train dogs and avoid the cops at every single opportunity.

The other sheriff in the white shirt steadily put on gloves as if she were going to search him as well. The sheriff who claims he wasn't laughing should be fired as well. No one did anything to help this man. It doesn't matter his crime no one deserves to be treated like that and I think an example should be made out of all if them.

First of all yes what she did was wrong and totaling demeaning. But before we all decide to hang her out to dry we should watch all of the video and at least be able to hear sound. I get all points made and I'm certainly not saying that what she did is acceptable because it's not. But I think firing her is a little extreme. The thing that urks me the most about this story is that several people who have made comments are trying to turn this into a race issue. People for god sake quit trying to make this a racial thing!!!! I again think that what she did and the others around her did was wrong. But before we all pass judgment we need to stop and see all of the info not just a 3 second video with out sound.

This isn't new, our police force has focused on being a force more than anything else for so long now, it's not funny.
It's sad that I'm more afraid of calling the police than of being the victim of a crime, but it's been that way for a long time now. I'm used to it.

I have read a good many of the comments. I found the video very disturbing, I cannot belive that there can be any explanation for this at all - I have to say that it looks like just another day at the office, I don't see any evidence at all that anybody in the immediate area was shocked or surprised at the actions of this 'officer'. I don't 'buy' the explanation that this was 'out of character' - it looks very much 'in character' to me - what a thoroughly nasty act and one that should be dealt with swiflty and decisively.

I"m a loan officer. Most of us RATIONAL people know that cops and other law enforcement are mostly good and put up with horrendous people and attitudes all day long and they show remarkable restraint, TOO MUCH in my opinion. I"m not defending this cop at all, just law enforcement in general. ANd I totally agree with the comments about what if this victim were black and cops white. It would be a WHOLE DIFFERENT situation. They would have already fired the cop, the ACLU and every other civil rights loser would already be in town. There would be street protests, riots, and everything else if the cop wasn't fired and prosecuted.

Video is one of the best things to happen for our citizens and for good officers. Many things happened in the past which have caused problems for our officers today. The only officers who have a problem with video are the ones who are afraid of the truth. (Athough video can on rare occasions be misleading.) I have been a police officer for 30 years and I welcome any review of any arrest I make. This deputy should be charged criminally as well as fired. Her cohorts should be dealt with severely. There is no way you could interpret this video in any other way. What if he was a member of your family or someone you knew? People should demand justice. Fire her and charge her for assault!

That deomstrates a mind set of a system, not just an out of control deputy. With that said, I am impressed that the video was retained. This needs to be looked into. Bad for the deputy. For all of you out there that are nothing more than reactionaries, calm down. I have a feeling, some of those words will be eaten. He was arrested for fleeing and eluding. That is more than just a minor traffic violation. People that do that, normally have something to hide. By the way, the sheriff's office internal investigators have fired many sheriff's office employees. They are fair when judging the actions of an employee against the Standard Operating Procedure of the HCSO and the guidelines from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

There is (or was) no obligation on the part of the new insurance company you are buying a policy from to report the fact you are buying insurance to the state. The state sees "no insurance" and suspends your license, bada bing bada boom. They're supposed to notify you by mail that they suspended your license, but if you get stopped in the meantime, you can find yourself in exactly the position this poor man was in. My husband and I learned of our license suspension only because we went into the driver license office to report a change of address, as you are supposed to. Never had a ticket, never encountered a police officer (thank God), but innocently driving around unaware of the suspended licenses. Sh*t happens.

Why do people keep comparing this to Rodney King? Rodney King ran from the cops and resisted arrest. The only reason it was made a big deal is because someone got it on video and because he is black. That's what happens when you run from the cops and resist arrest and I think they should beat people when they do that. If you're running, you must've done something. Not to mention, King is a criminal. Let's not forget.

FIRST, The report on his "fleeing and eluding" stated that he actually made a u-turn then pulled over for the officer. Clearly there was miscommunication in his records. 2nd; like abuela1942, I had my license suspended for "not having insurance" twice. The state has a bad habbit of not keeping records of insurance changes. I went from one company to another and 2 out of 3 cars were reported correctly but my classic beetle wasn't. I went to renew my tag and was told (the 1st time) my license, tag and registration were suspended. I then had to fork out money for a mistake the state made. The 2nd time was the same exact thing, but I found out after I was stopped at a check point. The officer was kind enough to believe me and told me to report immediately to the dmv the next day. I worked in the Insurance industry and they are supposed to notify the state and any lein holder of your coverage (yes it is required). The state of Florida is the worst at keeping track of things.

Take your heads out of the sand... white people are the ones who get dumped on and nothing is done. I know all black people are not like this woman, but I also know that many black people use the race card many times when it isn't a race issue and I also find it hard to believe that she would have treated a man of her own race so heartlessly. Ugh, I didn't want to say this because I know I'm going to get flack for it...But I don't care. This hasn't (and probably won't) turn into a race issue because we (whites) don't flip the race card every time we feel some injustice has been served. We actually fight for something based on REAL POINTS, not something that isn't really there. While Sharpton and his minions use the race card at every turn.
Besides the fact that the officer is black and the victim is white, I don't see any other race issue here. Of course, if it comes out that either one was using racial slurs, I'll sing a different tune.

Mosley, I am part Cherokee, that means my people were here already. This is my land. In case you didn't know it, black people sold other black people into slavery. Most blacks were treated as part the family, (spite of what twisted history is taught in school or hollywoods version). These black people were taken care of from the cradle to the grave. There was some exceptions and that happened both north and south, so don't get on some band wagon about that. Where on earth do you think your people would be today if not for your ancestors coming here to work? You might not even exist, since some blacks in Africa were cannibals. I think blacks have been over paid with welfare and low income or free housing. It is a known fact that you can get government aid faster if you are black and most whites can't get it at all. This is a hate crime against a white man caused by a black woman. I can tell you this, had a white woman did this to a black man, I would be just as mad and just as angry. But the bottom line is... it is a hate crime and should be called a hate crime!

Marshall-Jones has been on the job for 22 years. One doesn't report to work each day for 22 years, regularly behave in a cordial and professional manner, then suddenly snap and attack a defenseless, compliant person. It is not reasonable to think this is the first time in 22 years she has exhibited such behavior. It begs the question, how does she behave when someone really challenges her? Also, it is not reasonable to think that disciplining her supervisors will have a positive result. I believe her supervisors tolerate such behavior which is why Marshall-Jones was so remarkably cavalier and comfortable after dumping a helpless person (as can be readily seen on the video). Based on past experience, she expected no punishment; in fact, she deemed these actions reasonable and proceeded to search the victim as if everyday she tosses a quadraplegic. The officer assisting with the search expressed no alarm, no surprise, instead acting just as routinely. Why? Is it because such repugnant behavior is routinely tolerated by supervisors and the HCSO? If this were not true, why wasn't there a report of abuse filed by her supervisors before the tape became public? She AND her supervisors should be fired immediately if the HC Sheriff has any guts at all- doubtful, you bet! Given no expression of remorse, Marshall-Jones and her supervisors believe the real problem is the PR nightmare the Sheriff has to deal with- not their criminal behavior- because their actions were caught on tape. In addition, an independent review of all available tapes should be performed to find other criminals who are HCSO officers.

I suppose that you can't find ONE good thing to say about Sheriff Gee, right? You can point out all of these things that have gone wrong in the department and ABSOLUTELY point the finger at him... but it is not his responsibility to hold every single deputy's hand throughout his or her work day. It is his job to do what's right after people screw up. As long as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west... people will ALWAYS screw up. Not just cops... EVERYONE. He can't possibly prevent every single one of his deputies from making a wrong choice. These officers who have a lapse in judgement should be held accountable for their own actions... not their boss.
Everytime you screw up at work, should your BOSS get in trouble or have his job threatened?? I think not.

I had the horrible experience of being arrested for something I didn't do and spending hours at central booking while waiting for bond to post. While I was there the deputies pushed a kid to the point of freaking out and then 4 guards peppersprayed him. They seemed quite thrilled with themselves. After they sprayed the kid in the face, they tied him to a wheelchair in the middle of the booking area. They did aim a fan at him - to help ease the pain, I guess. The kid was motionless, his face was all red, his eyes were watering like crazy and swollen shut. I have no idea what the kid was there for, but the cops pushed him into the situation because they could. It was horrific to watch this situation.BTW - no charges were ever filed against me and the case was dropped. Don't think it can't happen to you...

Charlette Marshall-Jones you are inhuman. I hope a better picture of your face (Mug shot) will be posted so all can see whom you are. I only hope the local leaders in Hillsborough come to their senses and demand an arrest immediately.Brian get checked out, you more than likely have some injuries you are unaware of. I find what the Deputy did to be horrific regardless of race, creed or color.... Reflect for a moment if you will, while you are foaming at the mouth about the nerve of any black person who has the moxy to dump a white man out of a wheelchair, think how many black men have been hung from trees, and had their genitals split open as one of the many forms of entertainment for white men, women and children, along with a string of other creative ways to degrade and humiliate a man based on the color of his skin.... Lets not focus so much on the color of the assailant's skin, so much as her reprehensible act.... She deserves everything expreseed in these blogs, but please, just for one day, can we look at the act, and not the color lines....?!! I am so sick of hearing how blacks have more rights than anyone else. If this were true, blacks, or as you like to refer to them as "African-Americans" would have been included in the Constitution...., which is for the exclusive rights of white America.... excluding all others! What exactly is "African-American???" Let's be honest. Things have to change! You all are screaming for justice. Where is the justice for all???

KM13 -
I was patient after the cops started tasing people for kicks and giggles.
I was patient after the cops screamed at me for being pregnant and nauseous, like morning sickness is a crime.
I stopped being patient when they arrested my son, claiming he was smoking marijuana. Marlboro isn't illegal yet. I stopped being patient when they claimed that he was resisting arrest and beat him for asking about the charge.
This city, this county, this state is so far beyond up, patience won't fix it. I'm not sure what will, or if anything will. That's why my husband has started submitting his resume to companies in Germany.
This is one Native Floridian that is ashamed and saddened for her state, to the point of leaving the flipping country.
I was in Gasparilla parades as a kid. I grew up here. I was born here. I'm sickened everyday when I read the news. I refuse to submit my children to this any longer. I can't change the state. I can leave.

SKR, no problem. I've always felt that way even as a child. What was done to Native Americans (who are the only true Americans, by the way), was atrocious. It was done for greed and control. Every time I see a movie or documentary about that era, I am always equally shocked and saddened. I am white and my family came to America in the late 1800's from Scotland via St. Kitt's. I am so happy to see in my history that my family never owned anyone and didn't participate in the Native American or African American brutality. I don't know how people can be proud to have that in their past.

If you gave me a free home and all the money I could ever want to move back to Tampa, I'd turn it down.
Thank goodness this was on camera. The officer must have been an idiot to not think her action (that was being recorded) would not cost her, her job and maybe her freedom. You've got criminals watching the criminals.

I do not agree with what I veiwed on the video. I also do not agree with the racial thing either. SKR where did you get your history lessons of the slave trade. Your people also enslaved black people. Leave race out of this. This is travesty to the whole human race. People do not respect others so everybody treats each other disrespecfully. There is no compassion or tolerence. It has been taught (a learned behavior) to bring violence against others especially in America and not to long ago. Hatred is what made America the why it is. Meaning race, class, creed, sexual, disabled etc. People are taught to hate because others are different. Stop the violence! People seems so short tempered these days judgemental and arrogant. As my Dad used to say, "The craphouse lawyers are out today!” Only, he wouldn't say "crap". It’s a fact that Sheriff Gee didn’t just fall off the turnip truck, folks. He’s not a rookie, and he’s certainly not stupid. He’s a police officer who’s been in that business a very long time and will examine this situation thoroughly. The video will be a part, but not all, of the facts checked and questions asked. Give him a chance to investigate, and then we’ll see what results. There’s no way this can be “swept under the rug”.

Wake up Tampa Bay. This is not a race issue. No doubt she would have done the same to another black peson given the same circumstances. I'm so tired of people bringing up the race issue every time a conflict breaks out with people of different races. It's a much bigger issue.
Power corrupts. Unfortunatly, a law enforcment career attracts persons who feel a need to push around weaker people. Do you really think sensitivity training will help? Sitting in a classroom for a day or a week will change one's personality? I doubt it... Maybe we should concentrate on testing indivuals for these personality disorders before putting them on the job?
Being an officer of the law is tough job and I know I couldn't do it. I commend those who do and thank them sincerly. It must be tough to be a good cop and hold it in when you see another cop do bad thing, for fear of being castigated by your peers. These cops don't like being held accountable for their actions. If only police could police themselves.
There are many good cops out there who will bend over backwards to serve and protect their citizens. In fact most would, but the actions (or inactions) of the relatively few who cannot properly use the power they have been entrusted with must be expellled from the system... without pay!
Anyway what is this "suspension with pay" crap that governmental departments use? If you screw up in the rest of the working world you are just fired. Here, it's like screw up and you get to take a little vacation!

Waiverwire1-
Why is everyone surprised. This is a Sheriff that tried to sue a web site in order to find posters that he felt were employees posting bad things about he and his staff. This is a Sheriff that has done everything in his power to rid the Office of the police union.
This is a Sheriff that had deputies pass a stranded wheelchair motorist for 8 hours on the Veterans without one stopping to help.
This is a Sheriff who's deputies arrested drivers for DUI who were not.
This is a Sheriff who's deputies arrested a female for speeding and who was trying to get to the hospital as she had heard her father was having a heart attack. She was arrested in the parking lot of the hospital.
This is a Sheriff who's deputies gave a mother a ticket for a u-turn while trying to get her sick and vomiting child to the doctor across the street.
Does anyone see a pattern here??? Has Sheriff Gee allowed his agency to get out of hand? I am told by many deputies he is never there, but allows the Office to be run by his staff.....his employees call it by committee.----------------------------------------
I suppose that you can't find ONE good thing to say about Sheriff Gee, right?
I think not!!
LEADERSHIP REFLECTS ITSELF FROM TOP TO BOTTOM AND IT IS THEN THAT YOU SEE WHAT TYPE OF LEADERSHIP YOU HAVE AT THE TOP...OBD

I find it very hard to believe that the deputy who mistreated the quadriplegic will retain her job. It's like Sheriff Gee said, this is not a training issue. Retraining is not the solution. You don't have to be told about how not to treat a quadriplegic in this obvious situation. I am in Virginia now and was so disappointed to see that this story was coming out of Hillsborough County, Florida. Way to go idiot. Like someone else said, this story has hit the national news and is an embarrassment for Tampa. Thanks a lot. The only right thing to do is fire her. She was very unsympathetic to this individual. That no one observing it reacted more appropriately is upsetting. I don't know how she can think she did nothing wrong and will be redeemed. I will be waiting for further details on this story. Interesting comment someone made on her being suited to work with a wheelbarrow.

whew you KNOW the Tampa Firemen are happy to have the heat off them for fifteen minutes.
Maybe they'll start having their friends the sheriffs dump people out of wheelchairs on purpose to get the heat off them for a bit. LOL.
PUT NOTHING PAST THEM.And, this is REALLY SAD from a person who grew up not understanding why anyone would call another person a pig because they wore a uniform.THEY ARE PIGS.
A few are not.
MOST ARE.And very smug on top of that. You know why?
Ask charlie.
And ask george.
NO accountability.
They know that there is NO ONE who will put them in their place.
But, we'll just see about that, soon.

Blanks and Charges

Okay, tell me if this sounds mercenary. I'm leaving out names and identities for now, and even some words to protect those who frankly don't deserve protection but having never been a RAT (like some) I just don't feel good about spilling people's filthy sides of their lives onto the WWW...

However -- (you knew this was coming, right??) -- I'm willing to disclose same for a fee. In fact, I'm going to disclose some of this in a book which will definitely be for sale very soon but if you'd like to know if your name or some similar aspect that identifies your smarmy and illegal acts towards me and my family have been mentioned I'd be happy to negotiate a fee with you. For the record, save your pennies if I've known you longer than thirty years. Out of respect for you and your family I'll leave your names out. Out of respect for you and your family I have remained silent. Apparently this same respect was not inbred in you. That's a pity but you and yours are safe with me. The ones who took it upon themselves to do your bidding against an innocent family are wide open just like they've left MY family wide open. Herewith I refer to my extended family and network many of whom are currently suffering at your hands. Be on notice.

About Me

ANYWHERE, ANYWHERE LOL, United States
I was born a citizen of the world and have remained such but along with that: I'm a long time Tampa resident. Mixed bag at that as I've seen life here from nearly all angles and while somewhere in there I became slightly indoctrinated, I'm not too proud of the way people have taken over this city and run it with an iron fist for all but some. This city is working hard on creating just two classes. Thems and them dont's and they are working hard to shove some families down into the gutter for reasons known only to them. Some might be as petty as jealousy, some might be politically motivated, some might just be stupid and all are wrong. I want to believe we can get better but that would entail some stuff that I have no control over. I only can control myself and my reactions to what occurs.
