Help for ALL Children

A few things about this article really bother me. As I said in comments which being MINE rarely make it into the St Pete Times. Until I BITCH HERE. Then they publish them for awhile. What can I expect?

I'm not sure and therefore can't say whether Mrs. Bostock's heart is in the right place. Seems like all she wants to do is send the kid AWAY again. And maybe that's all that will help. Anyway, she seems genuine and so I am going to wish the best for her.

BUT, how ABOUT if this 'help' which is NEVER available for ANY child, never mind merely the adopted ones --is made available for ALL children? How many families and children would still be TOGETHER and not 'up for adoption' if their OWN families got the support they needed??

NOT in the form of punishment. Not what DCF is able to mete out but REAL help from real caring people. And THE DOLLARS to make it happen.

Take the money BACK from DUMPS like the YMCA which squanders it and give it to a caring person/ group and FINALLY for FLORIDA to set an example --- help children where and when they need it and STOP destroying families.

All this emphasis placed on adoption and foster care...

WHERE is the study showing that IF children and families REALLY got the help they needed --- there wouldn't be so many kids 'in the system'.

Martin Anderson's family turned to this system for help.
That worked out great for them.

Help ALL OF US HELP ALL THE CHILDREN.

It shouldn't be any easier to take a child or adopt a child. It should be easier for a parent to call and get help when they need it. NOT from the state. From REAL people who want to help.

Oh, and the other thing that bothered me was (actually TWO THINGS) how this article referred to the adoptive parent as MORE than a regular citizen (because she's a school-board member) and also how it pointed out that a highly exalted school-board member got HER ALLOTTED TWO MINUTES like teh rest of the schlubs.

And, that's ALL WE NEED, DAMMIT. One or two minutes. Anything else is cutting into the polo matches and the derbies and teh lobster dinners.

Get OVER YOURSELVES. Take a salary cut. Help a kid. ANY kid. Before it's too late.

Help parents keep their OWN children. When all else fails be sure the child has every support they need. Plenty of volunteers available.

Feast of the Hanging Chads

Over at AlterNet there is a very interesting article by hmmm. Jim HighTower. I have this habit of not reading bylines. It's to keep me open-minded. If not I have a tendency to shut people down without a thought/chance.

I reserve this right (to shut people OUT) for Rush Limbaugh (can't stand his voice) Ann CouldTurd, Michelle Malkin, a few others. I also can't STAND Bush's voice or face but I DO try to listen to him as he talks aloud to himself and his god because I made the mistake of thinking if I ignored him he would go away. Nope. He actually RE-STOLE teh election and kept goose-stepping ON. I won't make THAT mistake again.

You should read the article. He suggests another shutdown BY US. BY THE PEOPLE FOR THE PEOPLE. November 6th. Good idea, Jim !!!

Where is Congress? It's way past time for members to stand up. Historic matters are at stake. The Constitution is being trampled, the very form of our government is being perverted, and nothing less than American democracy itself is endangered -- a presidential coup is taking place. I think of Barbara Jordan, the late congresswoman from Houston. On July 25, 1974, this powerful thinker and member of the House Judiciary Committee took her turn to speak during the Nixon impeachment inquiry.

"My faith in the Constitution is whole; it is complete; it is total," she declared in her thundering voice. "And I am not going to sit here and be an idle spectator to the diminution, the subversion, the destruction, of the Constitution."Where are the likes of Barbara Jordan in today's Congress? While the BushCheney regime continues to establish a supreme, arrogant, autocratic presidency in flagrant violation of the Constitution, members of Congress largely sit there as idle spectators -- or worse, as abettors of Bush's usurpation of their own congressional authority.

Why it matters

Separation of powers. Rule of law. Checks and balances. These may seem to us moderns to be little more than a set of dry, legal precepts that we had to memorize in high-school history class but need not concern us now. After all, the founders (bless their wigged heads!) established these principles for us back in 17-something-or-other, so we don't really have to worry about them in 2007. Think again. These are not merely arcane phrases of constitutional law, but the very keystones of our democracy, essential to sustaining our ideal of being a self-governing people, free of tyrants who would govern us on their own whim. The founders knew about tyranny. The monarch of the time, King George III, routinely denied colonists basic liberties, spied on them and entered their homes at will, seized their property, jailed anyone he wanted without charges, rounded up and killed dissidents, and generally ruled with an iron fist. He was both the law and above the law, operating on the twin doctrines of "the divine rule of kings" and "the king can do no wrong."

(Alert: Ready or not, the following is a high-school refresher course on American government. There will be a test.) At the front of the founders' minds was the necessity of breaking up the authority of their new government in order to avoid re-creating the autocracy they had just defeated. The genius of their structure was that legislating, administering, and judging were to be done by three separate but coequal branches, each with powers to check the other two, and none able to aggregate all three functions into its own hands (a result that James Madison called the very definition of tyranny). Just as important, to deter government by whim, all members of the three branches were to be subject to the laws of the land (starting with the Constitution and Bill of Rights), with no one above the law. As Thomas Paine said, "The law is king."

These were not legal niceties but core restraints designed to protect citizens from power grabs by ambitious autocrats. Such restrictions also make our country stronger by vetting policies through three entities rather than one. This balanced authority helps avoid many serious policy mistakes (or at least offers a chance to correct them later), and it is intended to prevent the one mistake that's fatal to democracy -- allowing one branch to seize the power to rule unilaterally.

Of course, sound schemes are oft screwed up by unsound leaders, and we've had some horrible hiccups over the years. John Adams went astray early in our democratic experiment by claiming the unilateral authority to imprison his political enemies; Abe Lincoln took it upon himself to suspend habeas corpus during the Civil War; Woodrow Wilson launched his notorious Palmer Raids; FDR rounded up and imprisoned Japanese-Americans; J. Edgar Hoover and the infamous COINTEL program spied on and arrested thousands in the Vietnam War years; and Ronnie Reagan ran his own illegal, secret war out of the White House basement.

In all these cases of executive excess and abuse, however, outrage flowed from the public, courts stood up to the White House, congressional investigations ensued, and the American system regained its balance relatively quickly. As Jefferson put it when he succeeded Adams and repealed the Alien and Sedition Acts, "Should we wander [from the essential principles of our government] in moments of error or alarm, let us hasten to retrace our steps and regain the road which alone leads to peace, liberty, and safety."

This time is different

Now, however, come two arrogant autocrats like we've never seen in the White House. George W and his snarling enabler, Dick Cheney, are making a power grab so unprecedented, so audacious, so broad and deep, so secretive, so stupefying, and so un-American that it has not yet been comprehended by the media, Congress, or the public. The dictionary defines "coup" not just as an armed takeover in some Third World country, but as "a sudden and decisive action in politics, especially one affecting a change of government illegally or by force."

Constantly waving the bloody flag of 9/11 and swaggering around in commander-in-chief garb, the BushCheney duo are usurping authority from Congress, the courts, and the people, while also asserting arbitrary power that does not belong to the presidency.

Stop the BUSH COVER UP

Here's what's going on: For years the Bush administration has been illegally spying on Americans' phone calls and emails with the willing assistance of big telecom companies like Verizon and AT&T. Lawsuits moving forward against these companies may be the only way we ever find out how far the Bush administration went in breaking the law.²

So the White House is putting enormous pressure on Congress to give the phone companies retroactive immunity for all the laws they broke spying on innocent Americans. And some key Democrats are ready to go along!

It seems hard to believe, but it's true. Just months after Congress capitulated to President Bush and politics of fear, they seem ready to do it again.

This happens again and again because politicians are afraid of being seen as weak on security—and because they buy the conventional wisdom that voters don't really care about constitutional freedoms.

But the truth is that voters understand something that Washington doesn't: There is no trade-off between fundamental liberties and security. In fact, a recent poll by our friends at the ACLU found that an overwhelming majority of Americans want Congress to exercise its oversight authority by forcing the Bush administration to get warrants before wiretapping Americans. Further, Americans strongly oppose giving lawbreaking phone companies amnesty for their actions.³

The New York Times put it perfectly this Saturday:

"The question really is whether Congress should toss out chunks of the Constitution because Mr. Bush finds them inconvenient and some Democrats are afraid to look soft on terrorism... This provision is not primarily about protecting patriotic businessmen, as Mr. Bush claims. It's about ensuring that Mr. Bush and his aides never have to go to court to explain how many laws they've broken. It is a collusion between lawmakers and the White House that means that no one is ever held accountable." ⁴

News reports indicate that Democratic senators agreed to give phone companies retroactive immunity after the Bush administration presented a one-sided case that these companies "acted in good faith."⁵

That's ridiculous. A judge appointed by President Bush Sr. wrote an opinion finding that "AT&T cannot seriously contend that a reasonable entity in its position could have believed that the alleged domestic dragnet was legal."⁶

The bottom line is that President Bush is trying to cover up his own lawbreaking with this immunity.

We need Congress to stop him. Senator Chris Dodd has courageously vowed to block this bill if the immunity provision is not taken out.⁷ We need to make sure other members of Congress come out and support his strong stand.

If enough of us sign, we can make it plain just how broad the support for preserving the Constitution is.

Dear Democracy for America members,

I am writing to you to ask you for your support because you, as much or more than any group of voters in this nation, recognize the real issues confronting our country, the real solutions, and the shortcomings and failures of many of our political leaders in addressing them.

I know that many of you agree with me that half measures, compromises, misguided thinking and hollow rhetoric are not the answers. They are symptomatic of the problems, and, to a regrettable extent, the causes of the problems. That's why we are in a war, and why we're moving ever closer to another. That's why our Constitutional rights and protections are being violated every day. Why 47 millions Americans are uninsured and another 50 million are under-insured. Why millions of American jobs have been outsourced. And every other issue that we, as progressive and independent-thinking Democrats stand for is pushed aside.

DFA members have the power to change that by supporting the one and only candidate who isn't afraid to say what he believes - what you believe - and who won't back down.

Ending the war and preventing the next one

I am the only Democratic presidential candidate who campaigned against and voted against the war authorization resolution in 2002 and every supplemental appropriation since. Five years ago, I presented evidence to my colleagues in the House and Senate based on my own intelligence analysis which showed that Iraq did not have weapons of mass destruction and was not a direct threat to the U.S. or our allies. I shared that analysis with my Congressional colleagues and rallied more than 120 members to vote against the authorization.

The defense offered by other candidates - "If I knew then what I know now" - is a feeble excuse for making the wrong decision when it mattered most to make the right decision. Many of us did know then because we weren't tricked or bullied by the White House. We knew it was wrong, and we knew the consequences. So did you.

But what makes the newfound anti-war claims of some other candidates even more indefensible is that they voted to continue funding the war, year after year, at least until their Presidential campaigns began. It's simply not enough to say you oppose the war now when you continued to fund it time and time again.

Right now, the war is fully funded until early next year. There is more than enough money available to bring all of our troops and equipment home within a few months, but the Congressional leadership is unwilling to challenge the President.

My plan, embodied in HR 1234, would end the war, end the occupation, establish an international security and peacekeeping force, begin the process of reconciliation, and provide the kind of support needed for reconstruction.

My target is not 2013. My target is three months after taking office.

But in the meantime, we in the Congress, with your support, must use every means at our disposal to force the White House to act now to bring our troops home. And, we must use every means at our disposal to stop the White House from launching a new war on Iran with the same flimsy, deceptive and outright fraudulent claims it used five years ago.

After failing to deliver what it promised in last year's election, the Democratic leadership has a moral obligation, overdue, to live up to its word to the American people. Please cast your vote:

Empowering Constitutional abuses, and ending them

I am the only Democrat running for President who voted against the unconstitutional and illegal U.S.A Patriot Act. The other candidates were wrong then, and various federal court rulings have made that abundantly clear. We can't condone the shredding of our Constitution in the name of "national security." True "universal health care"

I am the only Presidential candidate who supports a truly universal, single-payer, not-for-profit health care system to cover all Americans. Every other plan preserves, and in some cases, enhances the role of private, for-profit insurance companies that make their billions by not providing coverage. Forcing Americans to buy private insurance denies the moral obligation of this nation to provide coverage for its citizens. Any scheme that provides subsidies or other financial incentives to for-profit providers to make coverage less expensive or more accessible is just that: a scheme. It further enriches the insurers, at taxpayers' expense, and would still not guarantee full coverage or universal availability.

Marriage equality

I am the only candidate running for president who supports full marriage equality. I believe marriage equality is a defining issue for the 21st century. Any two people who love each other should not be denied the right to share their love with each other. The other candidates disagree. Once again, they are wrong.

If we don't stand up for this issue - vote our hearts and our consciences - the Democratic Party and the Democratic candidates will continue to ignore the issue of marriage equality and continue falling back on "civil unions" as a more "acceptable" alternative. Impeachment

I am only the presidential candidate willing to demand the impeachment of Vice President Dick Cheney. Every pair of DFA eyes reading this e-mail knows that this President and this Vice President have committed serious crimes worthy of impeachment. This it not a personal attack against the Vice President. It is about the sanctity of the Constitution. This democracy must be protected against leaders who have no regard for the Constitution or the rule of law. The mechanism for taking action against such leaders is impeachment. We, the people, have not only the right but the obligation to stop this. HR 333, which I introduced, is the appropriate recourse under the law to hold those leaders accountable and answerable.

Again, the Congressional leadership and the other candidates are unwilling to take the kind of action that our Constitution, our laws, and our beliefs demand that we take. And again, they are wrong. Please cast your vote:
