My own Mother's and Father's Day

There are times I am so grateful for the family I was given, many of whom were murdered by some who weren't as fortunate as I was .... ----- sometimes my gratitude doesn't really overlap with the days it's 'supposed to.' The societally recognized days.

It's a handy trait in a way although some probably view it as living 'compartmentally'. I prefer to think of it as 'blind luck' that God gave me because it was one of those tools I would need too frequently ... for many reasons. I do almost run on auto-pilot. There are times I consciously live DIRECTLY in the moment but those are strictly related to the people I genuinely care for. It's a huge effort for me to 'be present' because I really, truly am a dreamer.

My Mama always knew. I was the easiest, hardest child to raise. Without my Father, who was murdered before I really got going, without quite realizing it I turned to my Grandfather and uncles or inward. Not to my Mom. I could see she had her hands full and Iwas naturally quiet, anyway. Shy. Still both.

You have to push a person like myself pretty far to drip even one moment of closely guarded privacy out into another's ear, never mind the WWW. But, these aren't really MY secrets I speak of ... not even really secrets. Everone knows this stuff. No one minds as long as it is not directed towards them. There's a reason for that.

Anyway ... I went to private schools. Didn't really want to. Was the only argument I had with my Mom .... NOT GOING THERE NEXT YEAR. NOT GOING BACK. LOL. Sure and there I was sitting in the same fucking desk the next day. By hook or by crook.

You'd look at these people ... I actually liked school. I like learning stuff, it gave me access to things that you didn't get out in 'the country' and that's where we lived at the time. (first house that the ummmmm fire ummm fighters burnt down and then subsequently stole my mother's awesome antique car collection.

My Mom always knew what mattered.

The people? They were pretty cool. I kinda more observed and wandered through it all, sometimes more ummmmm upright than others. I worked after school and had an older significant other and a few people I genuinely liked and you know ... in my mind I was never there because it never really mattered other than that's what my Mom and Grandpa wanted me to do.

But sometimes you'd look at these people and their bright smiles and you'd know the little things that were missing in your own life and just for a TEENY TINY second you'd wonder ... wow, she looks nice and happy. Wonder what it's like to go home with a handsome brother to a nice family where they're all alive and a future laid before them. Not even really thought that hard about it. But a few people in particular I remember thinking .... wow, lucky girl or lucky guy.

My Mom always knew.

Today .. yknow --- it's one of those days that was driven home to me WAY DEEP how goddamn lucky I am to be who I am, born to the family I had and walking into a home as full of love as a heart can make it.

I'm sorry you had it different.

Your brother is a MONSTER. I hope you didn't know it at the time and had that pretty smile plastered on for all the world ... I'm glad I only wondered for a second because honest.

Better you than me.

My family have never shamed me with their avarice and murdering.

I can take pride in that no matter what ever happens.

I hope if you and he had children that they aren't being raised as greedy, monstrous beings.

Feeling lucky.

Hope you didn't follow the same path as he did. I always thought you were so pretty and nice.

Proclaimed 'Banner Year' For Prosecutions

Federal prosecutions in the Middle District of Florida are forecast to be 15 percent higher than last year, according to a research organization that tracks government statistics.
The latest data from the Justice Department show that during the first 11 months this fiscal year, there were 1,881 new prosecutions in the Middle District of Florida, the district that includes the Tampa area.
The report comes after the U.S. Attorney's Office in Tampa announced a "banner year" for prosecutions, with an increase in indictments over last year and $2 million more in seized assets than last year.
Then-U.S. Attorney Robert O'Neill pointed to three factors that led to the upswing in indictments and money seized: a good relationship with local law enforcement agencies, the hiring of 25 new prosecutors over the past year, and the more tenured prosecutors "taking stock of what they have" and realizing they have a good job and have a chance to make a difference.
If prosecutions continue at the same pace, the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse forecasts that the prosecutions total will be 2,052 for this fiscal year, compared with 1,780 last year.
The top spot for prosecutions here goes to drug cases, which made up nearly 33 percent of prosecutions in the district in the first 11 months of this year.
Immigration crime was the second-largest category of prosecutions in district. Those cases made up more than 24 percent of prosecutions in the first 11 months of the fiscal year.Immigration matters accounted for 54 percent of all new cases filed in August in U.S. Federal Court, according to the clearinghouse, which is based at Syracuse University.

Unconstitutional, looks like you are talking to yourself as no one has commented back to you. Neither Denny, myself or anyone else who has done the job for 20+ years have ever said that the occupation was perfect. What you have never realized is in the larger picture, it is pretty good here compared to the rest of the country. Tampa and Hillsborough County will handle over 1 million calls this year. The very few problems is all that you ever look at. Most other posters on here are smart enough to look at the big picure over-all. Maybe you should catch up to the rest of us.

Scott, nobody else was awake when UNCON was talking to himself. But in reality many cops have a really vague idea of what the law IS and they react on what they think the law SHOULD BE. I'm glad they are prosecuting more of the drug & immigration crimes. There needs to be a loud and clear message sent & received so that eventually it will get through some pretty thick skulls. I want to live in a safer society. I don't want to be afraid to drive in the neighborhood I grew up in but I certainly am. I went to 1st & 2nd grade at Sulpher Springs Elem. You wouldn't catch me driving through that hood these days! The people who live in those areas deserve to feel safe and the children shouldn't be watching hookers & crack dealers on the corners while they are outside playing. Prosecute and make them serve time for their crimes. Stop the insanity of just passing them through the system time & time again.

Prosecuting the people and keeping them locked up is for sure not the answer. You think our government would be more proud to drag out some stats on rehabilitation or diversion programs that are impacting certain areas or other programs which actually work towards changing behaviors rather than locking people up for simple drug offenses. It's very telling that our government celebrates the arrest and prosecution of it's citizens rather than deal with the causes of the issues they claim to be dealing with.

The lesson in prosection & sentencing is that it finally teaches what was obviously not learned well in the home while a youth. There are consequences for your actions. Life is the result of the choices YOU make! You do the crime, you do the time. If you keep your nose clean & obey the laws then you get to stay out of the courthouses & jail system. It's pretty simple. Just like if you behave in school you can stay out of the Principal's office.My husband & I had a disagreement about something minor a child had done in school & a teacher told the child not to do it again. He said that other kids were doing it so why did they single out his child. I told him what a horrible response as a parent. Instead you should support the teacher and remind the child that these are the rules, the child knows the rules and it doesn't matter if the other kids are getting away with it. You are my child and you will obey the rules. If I learn from the school you aren't then don't worry about what kind of trouble you get into at school. You be in deep doo doo at home! It worked quite well for both of my kids. They were never sent to the office and are college graduates. They knew momma was not playing about this.Most kids today have no respect for adults because they are not taught the simple value. They only know they attitudes and just how far will that get them in life?

Scott.....wasn;t it the basic foundation of our laws, that it is better to let a thousand guilty people free, rather than to unlawfully arrest one innocent person ? ........that is the very theory that all of our laws were founded upon........You sir seem to have the opposite theory of law. You sir, believe that you should arrest without hope of conviction and that is against all legal ethics......I understand your point.......but that theory is exactly what is wrong with the police officers today......We do not live in a Nazi police state.

Uncon, please show me in any statement that I have ever made that I believe the cops should arrest without any hope of conviction? You won't find it because I have never said anything close to that or many other things that you accuse either Denny or I of saying. I don't know what this obsession you have about law enforcement and your unreasonable expectations that they have to be 100% perfect all the time. Not me, Denny or anyone else has ever claimed perfection. Then again, I do not know of any perfection in any occupation including P.I's. What I do know is that our area has some of the best leo's you will find in our entire country. We do not have the problems here like in Detroit, Chicago, New Orleans, L.A ect... You need to get a life and try to be perfect yourself. When you get there, then you can start tossing stones. If your human though, you will never be perfect either so keep the stones in your pocket.

They spend their law enforcement careers training for a decision they hope they never have to make:
Take a life to save a life?
Pinellas sheriff's Deputy B.J. Lyons spent decades training deputies to do just that. Then in May, a gunman opened fire at him in the St. Petersburg courthouse and Lyons' training took over.
In an instant, he drew his .45-caliber pistol, aimed and fired.
"I can teach you to fight all day, I can teach you to shoot all day," Lyons said, "but can I mentally prepare you to make the ultimate decision?
"Without a doubt, the hardest thing to do is tell yourself, 'Oh Lord, I've got to take a life here.' "
Three times in the past week, law enforcement officers in the Tampa Bay area have fired at someone in the line of duty. Two men died, and a third survived when the officer missed.
It's a decision officers are constantly drilled on, in the classroom and in the field, from role playing to high-tech simulators.
But one of the hardest things to teach is to pull the trigger when life depends on it.
Especially their own.
"The No. 1 objective," said training expert Roy Bedard, "is to go home."
In October, a Hernando deputy killed a man who shot at his own friends. A Largo officer killed a man he believed was going for a gun — which turned out to be a BB gun. And Hillsborough deputies killed a man brandishing a sawed-off shotgun.
Just within the past week, authorities say, a New Port Richey officer shot a man who ran at him with a butcher's knife, a Pinellas deputy missed a man he thought was reaching for a gun that turned out to be a flashlight, and a St. Petersburg officer killed a suicidal man who menaced officers with a machete and a gun.
Such scenarios are part of life for law officers.
So is this: Officers aren't trained to kill. They're trained to "stop the threat," in the parlance of law enforcement. The best way to do that is "aim for center mass" — and that can be fatal.
Cpl. Jared Douds, a Tampa police firearms instructor, compared aiming a gun under duress to threading a needle in a car crash.
"They have a split-second to make a decision whether they'll see their wife or kids again," Douds said. "That kind of stress is almost indescribable."

There's another psychological factor officers must overcome to make the right decision: Taking a life is an unnatural act.
"This natural mechanism may get you killed," said Bedard, a former Tallahassee cop and firearms expert. "Training has to teach officers how to take lives."
So how do you teach that?
"Those decisions come from a constant barrage of scenarios that condition the mind-set of the officer," Bedard said. "We put them in mock scenarios long before they encounter the real one."
Officers are trained to sort through several factors, Bedard said: What is the likelihood of harm? Does the suspect have the ability to harm? Is harm imminent? And is pulling the trigger the only option?
The officer's decision will forever be scrutinized — by fellow officers, prosecutors, the media and the public.
But under case law, officers aren't judged by hindsight. They're judged by whether they acted appropriately based on the threat they perceived at the time — not whether the suspect pointed a fake gun at them.
"We need to understand what the officer knew at the time," Bedard said. "It's always easy to pass judgment when you know the end of the story."

The decision to take a life will affect the officer's life. The occupation already carries a high risk of suicide and substance abuse. A shooting can bring everything from loss of appetite to post-traumatic stress disorder.
Sheriff's offices in Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco and Hernando all offer psychological counseling for their deputies.
"Before it was seen as more of a weakness, that someone wasn't strong enough to do the job," said Sgt. Thomas Acker, who heads psychological services for the Pinellas Sheriff's Office. "But the prevailing attitude now … is that having a reaction to having been involved in a deadly force situation is normal."
Deputy Lyons still trains officers. They often ask about the day he had to take a life.
"If he had gotten by us … it would have been a massacre," Lyons said. "I don't regret what had to be done because we saved a lot of lives that day.
"I've had people say I don't think I can do what you did. My answer is, you may have to, and yes, you can."

Voxy,that #1 objective for LEO's can never change. If a reporter asks the same question, it should ALWAYS get the same answer. Cops are not supposed to die doing there jobs. Sometimes they do. We continue to bury 120-150 of them every year.

The sad reality is cops have to kill bad guys to save lives. I know Dep. Lyons to be a decent man. It is sad there people who will murder innocents unless the good guys stop them. We are fortunate to have cops who protect us sheep from the wolves.

My dad was a sheriff for 34 years. He had to pull his piece several times in self defense. I admire our deputy's for doing their job. It is not easy to make split second decisions in the face of danger. The good ones out there are real heroes!

I think that officers should regularly be tested for steroids. It effects the judgment. You can see that some of them are on steroids. The symptoms are obvious.

Ambulance team rescues Largo woman from fire
A Pinellas County ambulance crew carried a 55-year-old woman from a burning home early today.
The pair, who did not have safety equipment or fire rescue training, risked their lives, said Largo fire Chief Mike Wallace.
"They had clearly entered an environment that was dangerous. They inhaled smoke and carbon monoxide. This was a great personal risk to do what they did," Wallace said.
Joshua Schuster (left in photos) and Michelle Molendyk (right) were just heading out of Sunstar headquarters on Ulmerton Road this morning when they saw smoke in the sky. They drove across the street to the Indian Rocks Estates Mobile Home park to investigate and discovered the back half of a mobile home engulfed in flames.
Around that time, just before 8 a.m., emergency personnel received calls of a fire at the park at lot No. 34 at 12701 126th Ave N.
Park residents told the ambulance team that someone lived in the home. Molendyk and Schuster entered the front door of the burning unit and found the woman unconscious near the door. They carried her outside, where they provided medical care.
The team said they had to try to save her even though they knew it was risky.
"It's another life," said Schuster, an assistant supervisor for Sunstar.
"I just had to get her out and get her away from the building," said Molendyk, an emergency medical technician and field training officer. "It was going up so fast."
The woman, Doris Williams, sustained burns on about 15 percent of her body and was flown by medical helicopter to Tampa General Hospital, authorities said. As of 3 p.m. today, she was in critical condition.
"I really hope she's going to make it," Molendyk said.
The ambulance crew was the first on the scene. Firefighters extinguished the blaze, which destroyed the home.
Sheriff's Office Arson Unit detectives and State Fire Marshal’s investigators were called to the scene, which is routine in cases where someone sustains serious injuries. The fire appears unintentional, but the cause has not been determined, detectives say.

Richard Sanders, a justice on the Washington State Supreme Court, has never been one to shy from controversy or blunt language. And last week, as he sat at a Federalist Society dinner and listened to Attorney General Michael Mukasey, Sanders reached his tipping point.
After listening to Mukasey defend the Bush administration's counterterrorism policies — its detainment practices at Guantánamo Bay, its interpretation of the Geneva Conventions' reach — Sanders stood and shouted "Tyrant! You are a tyrant!"
"Frankly, everybody in the room was applauding or sometimes laughing, and I thought, 'I've got to stand up and say something.' And I did," Sanders told The Seattle Times Tuesday. "I stood up and said, 'Tyrant,' then I sat down again, then I left." (he wasn't enjoying himself)

This is a unique man. I do remember reading about some other activity of his for which he was reprimanded.

Sunny over at Smashed Frog who frequently blogs against the human and civil rights being stripped from sex offenders (many of whom are NOT REALLY sex offenders)will appreciate what Judge Sanders was reprimanded for. AND, all of you should read the rest of the article.
