Smuggling suspects plead not guilty

All 13 suspects in an alleged smuggling organization, which authorities say funneled drugs and cell phones to Essex County Jail inmates, pleaded not guilty on Friday, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office reported.
Nutley resident and nine-year corrections officer Joseph Mastriani, 30, the alleged ringleader, pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy and official misconduct. He remains in jail on $200,000 bail, said prosecutor's office spokeswoman Katherine Carter.
His girlfriend, Nutley resident Jillian Watral, 31, a special education teacher at Washington Academy in Cedar Grove, also pleaded not guilty and was released on $100,000 bail, Carter said.
Homicide suspect Wilbert Best, 21, and alleged Latin Kings gang member Ricardo Ortiz, 32, who are accused of being Mastriani's point men within the jail, remain there on $200,000 bail, authorities said.
Newark residents Rose Guinyard, 29, and Madeline Rodriguez, 39, pleaded not guilty and still remain in jail on $100,000 bail, Carter said.
Carter said Bloomfield resident and Essex County corrections officer William Rupp, 30, and Union County probation officer John C. Smith, 33, of Rockaway, both received $20,000 bail and are in jail, Carter said.
Bloomfield residents Anthony Rotonda, 39; and Robert Koval Jr., 31, and Shannon Arguello-Falke of South Amboy remain in jail on $20,000 bail as of Friday, said Carter. Chang Park, 25, and Joseph Lehman, 25, both of Bloomfield, are free on $20,000 bail, she said.
The next court date is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 3 before Judge Michael Raven.
