HATS OFF to Lakeland Police Chief Roger Boatner

Changing the Definition of Violence Petraeus and Bush

Today is the first day of General Petraeus's testimony before Congress.

He's going to spend the next two days presenting cherry-picked facts and misleading data to convince Congress that the escalation is working.1 If he gets away with it, we could end up in Iraq for another 10 years.
Congress has fallen for the administration's lies before and it is critical they don't fall for them again. The truth is that the escalation has been a total failure and it's time to set a date to bring our troops home.

The truth about the escalation is that it made things in Iraq worse, not better. Independent reports show that the escalation has been a total failure. Violence in Iraq has gone up. This has been the bloodiest summer in Iraq for US troops.2 Iraqi casualties are running at double the pace of last year3 and there is evidence of ethnic cleansing.4
But the White House report won't tell us that. The administration actually came up with their own bizarre formula for measuring violence in the country. For example, deaths by car bombs don't count.5 The Washington Post reported that assassinations only count if you're shot in the back of the head—not the front.6
By gaming the numbers this way, they're able to claim that violence has dropped because of the escalation.
The key will be how Congress responds. If they accept the administration's version of the truth—if Democrats give interviews saying things are getting better, for example—that will become the consensus in Washington. And it will be years before we bring our troops home.

Special Session Postponed: Act Now to Save PIP and KidCare
September 8, 2007



Legislative leaders announced Wednesday that they are postponing the special session scheduled to begin September 18, citing a lack of consensus between the House, Senate and Governor on how to make necessary budget cuts.
In the letter released by Senate President Ken Pruitt and House Speaker Marco Rubio, they indicated that no "agreement on a framework for action" has been reached, but stated that they "remain confident that an agreement will be reached and that we will have a fall session."
As you know, the legislature failed to address some very important issues during the regular and special sessions earlier this year. No-fault and PIP auto insurance laws are expiring, putting millions more uninsured drivers on Florida roads and leaving accident victims without any minimum guaranteed health care. And Florida's half-million uninsured children are still waiting for the passage of the KidCare reform bill, which will prevent Florida from losing hundreds of millions of federal matching funds intended to provide health insurance to kids whose families make too much to receive Medicaid but not enough to afford private insurance.
Tell the Legislature to Get the Job Done Right This Time
This delay gives us more time to focus attention on these issues. Over the Labor Day weekend, we collected more than 1700 signatures from Floridians asking legislative leaders to expand the scope of the special session to take up this urgent legislation.
