Steinbrenner's concern about police and firefighters' families led to Tampa foundation

TAMPA — In July 1981, a Tampa police detective was shot and killed during an undercover drug deal. Less than a month later, two Tampa firefighters died when they were shot by a disgruntled former employee.
All three of the men left behind families and children, which caused George Steinbrenner III to worry.
"He loved children and wanted to make sure they were taken care of and taken care of properly," said Joe Voskerichian, executive director of the Gold Shield Foundation, which Steinbrenner formed.
The foundation provides full college scholarships to the spouses and children of law officers and firefighters killed in the line of duty. Started in Tampa in 1981, the foundation now also covers families in Pinellas, Citrus, Hernando, Pasco, Marion and Polk counties.
Steinbrenner, 80, a Tampa resident and owner of the New York Yankees, died Tuesday after a massive heart attack.
To date, the foundation has paid for the college education of 14 children and two spouses, with more currently receiving aid.
It all started with a $150,000 donation from Steinbrenner. Then a charity baseball game between the University of South Florida and the New York Yankees added an additional $75,000 to the pot, Voskerichian said.
Donations by Steinbrenner continued through the years, but he kept his role in the foundation low-key.
"He was not hands on, but he wanted to make sure everything was done properly and if there was anything we ever needed he was always ready to step up to the plate," Voskerichian said.

Stalking is a crime of psychological and physical terror and violence. Which shows a LOT of collusion among the ranks. From the state's attorney on down to his partner who lied for him about taking the cash.

So .... then as a warning to me because APPARENTLY I am the new news source for 'living under a rock' Tampa this broad and her co-criminal-in-my-opinion hopped into TWO COUNTY-ISSUED VEHICLES and stalked myself and my child.

It's bigger than THAT. Apparently this is NOT NEWS which the Tampa Tribune wishes to sully their readers' eyes with.

High cost of pensions straps cities

The three-step method to soaring public pensions in Florida has typically worked this way: 1) Law enforcement union lobbyists tell legislators to increase the formula; 2) Lawmakers ask "how high, " and, 3) Cities and counties get stuck with the bill.

Whether local governments can afford these lucrative retirement plans for deputies and police and firefighters at a time when private companies are shedding pension plans is a reasonable public policy question. But the point this week is that lawmakers are trying to have it both ways. In many cases, they are the ones who have voted to enhance the pension benefits but are now blaming mayors and commissioners for a spending spree.

The pension contributions by no means account for all the extra local government spending in recent years, but their costs far outstrip any general cost-of-living spending cap the Legislature is trying to impose. The Florida Association of Counties reports that pension costs jumped $273-million, or 63 percent, in the past six years. In St. Petersburg, police pensions have jumped 166 percent in the past five years.

The fluctuating financial markets are a significant factor, but the state establishes the level of benefits for all county, sheriff and school employees and many city employees. So when the state decided to include medical technicians and forensics specialists in the category of high risk, for example, it was also sending the bill to counties. High-risk employees receive 90 percent of their salary, along with cost-of-living adjustments, after 30 years of service.

Former Gov. Jeb Bush did try to cut pensions for many state employees, (somehow I can't imagine this includes firefighters) but the Legislature stopped him. Now lawmakers are acting as though pensions are divorced from the rising cost of public safety. At a state gathering of firefighters on Friday, Gov. Charlie Crist went so far as to promise that "not one person" would lose a firefighting job to the property tax cuts now being considered. Does he make the same pledge about their pensions?

(and of course, you wonder why he's so careful to be sure the firefighters know this safety margin is there. Could it be that INFLUENCE they have over elections????)

Pensions are part of the cost of providing law enforcement in Florida, and lawmakers have contributed to their escalation.

(I don't mind the pensions for the good ones but why should we be paying for selectively hired, ill-educated, uncaring cons and thieves to leave folks lying dead, to stalk citizens and then to 'retire' when they are found out? They should lose their pensions when wrongdoing has been an issue, they should also be prosecuted.)

When they make mistakes or beat someone half to death or even to DEATH, they just switch to being a fireman and then retire and collect their full benefits. The guys who left the lady to die in Pasco County? He retired the same half hour. Guess who is paying him into his eternity? The one who just got busted for breaking into a cell-phone store? If he was eligible for any pension he's collecting it. The one who got the DUI and fleeing the scene? If he's not STILL WORKING as a Tampa Fireman he'll retire and collect a big fat-ass pension.
