Fred Crenshaw, a 69-year-old retired postal worker who came to see Edwards at a hamburger stand in rural Laurens yesterday, said the political media is "obsessed" with Clinton and Obama.

"You watch these shows - which being retired, that's all I've got to do - and they’re like the Golf Channel on Tiger Woods," he said. Still, he and other backers said they still believed Edwards could win South Carolina.

"I'm hoping the press is proven as wrong as they were in New Hampshire," said Nancy Allen, a 60-year-old retired middle school teacher from Greenville, referring to Clinton's surprise victory.

Allen's daughter, Katherine King, 30, said she knocked on 90 doors for Edwards on Thursday and found surprising support for him, even in conservative neighborhoods.

"Greenville is so Republican, when I was canvassing I expected Republicans to be really mean," she said. "But the reception for John was overwhelming."

Almost universally, his fans said that even if he loses South Carolina, they hoped Edwards would stay in the race until the national convention in August, because they believed he enriched the debate or they thought he could be a compromise candidate at a brokered convention.

"That's how Lincoln won the presidency," said Karen Reagle, 65, of Atlanta, who came to South Carolina to volunteer.

WASHINGTON, Jan 11 (Reuters) - Ask corporate lobbyists which presidential contender is most feared by their clients and the answer is almost always the same -- Democrat John Edwards. (or huckabee because he's an unknown and weird see end of article)
The former North Carolina senator's chosen profession alone raises the hackles of business people. Before entering politics, he made a fortune as a trial lawyer. AGAINST CORPORATIONS

In litigious America, trial lawyers bring lawsuits against companies on behalf of aggrieved individuals and sometimes win multimillion-dollar settlements. Edwards won several.
But beyond his profession, Edwards' tone and language on the campaign trail have increased business antipathy toward him. His stump speeches are peppered with attacks on "corporate greed" and warnings of "the destruction of the middle class."
He accuses
lobbyists of "corrupting the government" and says Americans lack universal health care because of "drug companies, insurance companies and their lobbyists."

Despite not winning the two state nominating contests completed so far, with 48 to go, Edwards insists he is in the race to stay. An Edwards campaign spokesman said on Thursday that inside-the-Beltway operatives who fight to defend the powerful and the privileged should be afraid.
"The lobbyists and special interests who abuse the system in Washington have good reason to fear John Edwards.

"Once he is president, the interests of middle class families will never again take a back seat to corporate greed in Washington," said campaign spokesman Eric Schultz.

Open attacks on the business elite are seldom (read NEVER)heard from mainstream White House candidates in America, despite skyrocketing CEO pay, rising income inequality, and a torrent of scandals in corporate boardrooms and on Wall Street.

But this year Edwards is not alone. Republican candidate Mike Huckabee, former governor of Arkansas, sometimes also rails against corporate power and influence, tapping a populist current that lies just below the surface of U.S. politics.

One business lobbyist, who asked not to be named, said Edwards "has gone to this angry populist, anti-business rhetoric that borders on class warfare ... He focuses dislike of special interests, which is out there, on business."
Another lobbyist said an Edwards presidency would be "a disaster" for his well-heeled industrialist clients.
After this week's New Hampshire primaries, where he placed a distant third behind New York Sen. Hillary Clinton and Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, Edwards might not seem so scary. He ran second in the Iowa Democratic caucuses last week, trailing Obama and just ahead of Clinton.
Edwards suffered a blow on Thursday when Massachusetts Democratic Sen. John Kerry snubbed him and endorsed Obama. Edwards was Kerry's vice-presidential running mate in Kerry's failed Democratic bid for the White House in 2004.
BUSINESS'S FAVORITE UNCLEAR
Asked which candidate their clients most support, corporate lobbyists were unsure. Clinton has cautious backing within the corporate jet set, as do Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain and former Republican Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, they said.
These candidates represent stability to executives who have much to lose if November's election brings about the sweeping change some candidates are promising.(read john edwards)
Obama and Huckabee register largely as unknown quantities among business owners, both large and small, say lobbyists.
"My sense is that Obama would govern as a reasonably pragmatic Democrat ... I think Hillary is approachable. She knows where a lot of her funding has come from, to be blunt," said Greg Valliere, chief political strategist at Stanford Group Co., a market and policy analysis group.
But Edwards, Valliere said, is seen as "an anti-business populist" and "a trade protectionist who is quite unabashed about raising taxes." (blatant lie)

(they HAD to throw in the bullshit) Because John Edwards is President of the Center for Poverty and advocates a tax OVERHAUL to make taxes reflect the actual ability to pay same.
(unlike Bush) I've found when these guys like Valliere w/stanford talk about raising taxes he is referring to the TAX BREAKS THAT BUSH GAVE TO CORPORATIONS.

#2 - Take Away the Biggest Tax Shelter: "We must take away the biggest shelter in the current tax code: the very wealthiest are able to shelter capital gains and dividends from the Alternative Minimum Tax.
The very purpose of the AMT is to make sure the very wealthy pay their fair share...But the AMT is (now) doing exactly the opposite. It is increasingly hitting middle class families. At the same time, the AMT is not taxing many of the multi-millionaires it was meant to tax."

#3 - Eliminate Sweetheart Tax Deals for Lobbyists: "Third, we should strip out the sweetheart deals that make lobbyists and insiders rich, and give the country a tax code that amkes Americans richer....
We need to shut down special loopholes and abusive tax shelters, collect the taxes that are owed, and use the savings to pay down the deficit and cut taxes for hardworking families.
We should repeal the billions of dollars in corporate tax giveaways passed only last year...on everything from dog tracks to railroad tracks."

#4 - Eliminate Excessive Corporate Tax Benefits for Overseas Work: "Not only do we rarely tax overseas income from US companies--we often given them an extra $78 billion in tax breaks.
Our tax laws actually support the outsourcing of millions of jobs. That's wrong and Americans want us to get this right.
We need to crack down on tax havens, small countries that attract business by helping foreigners and corporations avoid their taxes in the US."

#5 - End CEO Abuse of Golden Parachutes and Excess Pensions: "...we have seen how when corporations fail, ordinary workers lose their pensions but some CEOs walked away with golden parachutes...The Financial times calls this group 'the barons of bankruptcy.'We must end the abuse of the tax advantage of executive pensions."

#6 - Make Our Tax Code Work for Working People: "Today, 25% of working families are living on the edge of poverty. They have so little in the bank, they can't survive more than 3 months if something happens to their income....
Savings incentives...would not just be good for families, they'd be good for the economy, too.... Using our tax code to encourage asset-building is one way to fight poverty."
Memorable Remarks in Edwards' Tax Reform Speech: "If we are all truly equal in the eyes of the Lord and the Law, if we are all given an equal chance to rise to our full potential, if we believe that there is dignity in hard work, then poverty has no place in America."

BUT, Valliere DID get this part dead on:

"I think his (John Edwards') regulatory policies, as well as his tax policies, would be viewed as a threat to business," he said.

The beauty of this is that the more I find out about John the more I like him. He's incredible.

Damn straight the corporations are afraid of him. For them, he's a very dangerous man.

AND, he's just what America needs.

Now, watch for the copy-cats. I noticed as soon as something began to work for Jim Davis that Charlie Crist picked it up and ran with it like it was his.

I like that Kerry endorsed Obama. Par for the course. I remember when Kerry had the nomination it was like watching a flower under a mushroom. People said he was flashy (edwards) I didn't get that. I thought he was cool. Then people started calling him a corporate lawyer so I turned off and went to Obama. THEN I turned off and looked harder at John.

The harder I looked at John Edwards THE MORE I FOUND to LIKE.

The harder I looked at the other candidates they fell flat with me each time.
