DENVER Protest News: A U.S. District Court judge ruled last week in Denver that, even though protesters' free speech rights will be damaged, "national security" justifies the government's plan to restrict parade permits to end 3 hours before the Democratic Party convention begins. Thousands of police and 400 national guard will be on duty, in a city where, four years ago, activists exposed and fought a widespread, illegal, program of local police surveillance on political activists.
Further, protesters will be kept away from the convention center, allowed only into chain link fenced cages 700 feet from the center's door. Reportedly, the cages won't be wrapped over the top with barbed wire, as they were at the last DNC in Boston. The "freedom cages" will be ringed by police and concrete barriers, and, as of today, huge media tents are being erected between the cages and the convention. Some comments on recent blog posts about the suppression of protest:

Much as I believe in 'to each their own' I DID view with some consternation those who voted nader rather than democratic. BUT, now I'm going to be one of them.

Obama and Reagan

Apparently there's a pretty major storm in the Democratic run at the Presidency right now. Obama mentioned Reagan as an 'instrument of change' and John Edwards REMINDS US of what a poor choice of person Reagan is. I didn't really research it myself until just now but it appears, according to WaPo that Obama prefers Reagan to Clinton. (could just be word choice)

Erica Jong came down VERY HEAVY on Obama, too. Wow, you GO, Erica....

Reagan -- the Hollywood red-baiter who rose from president of the Screen Actors Guild to president of the United States even though he was already senile. Reagan who gave us tax cuts and "trickle down" economics that didn't work -- except for the rich and richer and richest. Reagan who let "mommy" (Nancy) run the white house with the aid of her astrologer. Reagan whose horse was smarter than he was. (I do remember hearing that about the horse)

Give me a break.

One of the most disgusting sights in recent years was the genuflecting before this total fraud that went on at his funeral. And the hypocritical bullshit being trumpeted by the networks! Where were all the actors and writers and directors whose lives he ruined? I guess they were dead. But -- what, me worry? -- in America nobody knows one crumb of history, so Ronald Reagan's vicious red baiting, how he rose to prominence by smearing other actors and writers and directors, was totally forgotten.

I suppose Mr. Obama has forgotten too--scholar of history that he is.

BUT, when Erica Jong gets done raking Obama for this you HAVE to go read Juan Cole on Reagan's PASSING. I did totally laugh my ass off (made ya look) and it's short.


My EX and very favored boyfriend (PhD. college prof) was so outspoken against Ronald Reagan his face would change and he would get very vitriolic when he discussed the late grade B actor. Sometimes I almost see how it all fits together: Push an actor into the White House, get the laws changed so you can run for ElPresidente de Nortre Americano and then Ahnuld can be the NEXT GRADE B actor. So, I'm wondering also about the ties between Oprah and Ahnuld now.

Anyway, all the vitriol against Ronny Reagan from a gentle, elegant, brilliant outdoorsman who plied his trade doing important work while living for the weekends in the woods made a big impression on me. He rarely raised his voice. Reagan raised the voice.

I don't WANT a POPULIST President. I don't mind one who understands compromise; in fact, I consider that a VERY IMPORTANT quality. I don't understand how Obama can speak of 'standing up' to N. Korea and appease an Arnie and compliment a Reagan. I wouldn't call Reagan OR Ahnuld pacifists or compromisers. If they talk a good game their actions bely the words.

DO watch it. John edwards gives a thorough reminder of just how bad Reagan was. My old boyfriend was certainly NOT this dignified about it. He knew every Reagan sin, especially the environmental ones, chapter and verse. Once, I made the mistake of saying that Reagan was not that bad ..... whooo HOOOOOO was that some growing pains. LOL. But, yknow what? Thank GOD. I was too naive. looove precious and new. Nothing about Ronny Reagan broke us up. LOL

I wish everyone could know my old boyfriend and then no one could EVER forget how BAD Reagan really WAS.

I always thought he got Alzheimer's so he could forget what he did to America. OR, it was given to him purposely because he knew too much.

Barring knowing my old boyfriend, I'll give you John Edwards on Reagan. Don't let Reagan go down in history as a good guy ... he most DEFINITELY WAS NOT.

The sad thing is that this is likely just talking too much but it DOES display that, like myself at one time, Obama doesn't really understand history.

It's APPEASEMENT to hallow names like Reagan and Ahnuld. These are NOT progressive men. Arnie's like a mob dude third degree. Duh.

When this doesn't go over Obama will have learned like more seasoned politicians how to temper his talk, choose his words more carefully, study his history and keep himself contained somewhat. And, that will take some of the honesty out of his campaigning. And, I don't like that, either.

So ... though I don't like to say this because we ALL KNOW how I feel about John Edwards: I guess it's time to let Obama read his history and not latch on to his words because he wasn't lucky enough to have my old boyfriend. Four years ago I might have made the same idiotic mistake.

IF obama should EVER become President and IF HE EVER STICKS THAT AHNULD IN A CABINET POST MY ASS IS CROSSING THE BORDER OUTTA HERE IN ONE DIRECTION OR ANOTHER. I didn't
live through nineteen (feels like) years of BUSH to have another fear-factor working it's way up.

And, that Obama doesn't know this about these folks is indicative of the need for more seasoning. Next time, maybe. Give him a few years. Let him get out with the progressive folks who need him and find out what we really need. We need a SOUL MAN.
