TAMPA — The FBI has joined an ongoing investigation into whether three former Tampa fire marshal inspectors improperly accepted gifts from a sprinkler system company.
Questions about two longtime fire inspectors taking unauthorized gifts from Advanced Engineered Systems prompted the two officials to retire in December. A third inspector chose to retire a month later instead of taking a demotion to firefighter.
They were in charge of reviewing and regulating the company's work plans and permits.
FBI spokesman Dave Couvertier said federal authorities have been working jointly with the Tampa Police Department.
"I cannot discuss any details involving the investigation, but I can say we are looking at the different aspects of this case to ensure that a thorough review of the facts in this matter have been conducted in relationship to possible federal violations," Couvertier said.
Carlos Llerandi was demoted to firefighter in January after accepting a hockey ticket from AES. He chose to retire instead.
Officials said Manuel T. Perrone accepted entry fees for golf tourneys and the use of a 30-foot boat made available by AES. Toy K. Pelaez was accused of accepting hockey tickets from AES several times in one year. Perrone and Pelaez retired in December.
Tampa Fire Rescue Capt. Bill Wade said Thursday that he had no knowledge of the FBI investigation.

The company accused of supplying the gifts was not a Fire Sprinkler Company. The company was a Fire Alarm Company which supplies smoke detectors, alarm panels, etc.
