Lex Salisbury's monkeys

UPDATE: Until I read the below linked article I did not know that this is not just a compound as stated by the news yesterday. It's a future 'entertainment' sight. This reminds me of cocaine being god's way of saying you're making too much money. Never stopped a banker. LOL.


Well, I can only imagine that next time I drive through Polk County that the winged monkeys of Lex Salisbury (CEO LOWRY PARK ZOO) will fly off his MULTI GAZILLION acres of COMPOUND in Polk County and GET ME.





That's okay. Maybe they'll fall short and get the lady in the Confederate Flag jacket that they so proudly wear over to Polk. Fer gad's sake. She might as well just get the Floriduh flag. Same difference.



At any rate, my few moments of tv viewing yesterday garnered this: Lex Salisbury's (curator (CEO??) of Lowry Park Zoo) monkeys escaped and all kindsa money was being spent tracking them down even though they are NOT dangerous.

First of all, it was bad enough when he shot the tiger (though this story is the final spin where they all got together and blamed it on the new guy) and nearly (AND SHOULD HAVE) faced criminal charges.





Secondly, did anyone else SEE this supposed monkey pleasure island?




In unison we exclaimed: NO WONDER THE MONKEYS TOOK A POWDER.

One mama monkey put her baby on her back and swam for freedom. The rest followed her. I'm with Mama. That place SUCKS.

Do you see even ONE THING there for a monkey to do? Seriously?? A child would be bored in like ... well, maybe with a bucket and shovel it would take a day but this is cruel for a monkey.

The fucking news reporters treating it all and all the money spent like it's one big fucking joke. Yknow they can send a crew to Polk Cty but can't really figure out what's going on down at City Hall.

Despite the zoo school and all I've never in all the times I've visited Lowry Park been less impressed than the last several years.

Not sure what all that has to do with Mr. Salisbury but ... he took a family-friendly environment and bumped it up a notch with light-up glasses of martinis and such at A ZOO. Maybe that's the way they do it in New York and NOPE I have NO idea where Mr. Salisbury is from. I just know that Lowry Park Zoo went downhill despite the media claims that it's world-renowned.

Couple of palm trees and no visible shelter or thingies that monkeys like to play on ... on an island surrounded by a moat.



Nothing personal but in MANY counties it's quite illegal to dig your land out enough to create a body of water.





I'm sure Lex found his way around this or perhaps Polk does not have that hangup.

No surprise that Mr. Salisbury will never be held responsible.

He's big buds with the Sheriff. Or former sheriff. Same difference. This one groomed the one who defends his abusive deputies and stalks valuable property owners down the interstates and has his dumptruck developer friends who convoy with his fire dept buddies try to intimidate them by car-wrecking them.

It's all good.

Still, the question remains how the Polk County pack got to this point.
Their keepers never thought the patases would brave the dark waters of an 8-foot-deep, 60-foot-wide moat around their 1-acre island preserve north of Lakeland. But they did. Every last one of them went into the drink and over a wall.
That doesn't surprise Mark Wilson, a veterinarian who runs the Florida Teaching Zoo in Bushnell and who imports patas monkeys for placement in preserves and zoos.
He imported these patases, captured from the grasslands of Puerto Rico, and had them placed at the Safari Wild preserve in Polk County. Safari Wild is new, scheduled to open in 2009. Its co-owner is Lex Salisbury, president of Tampa's renowned Lowry Park Zoo.
The moat might work for captive-born monkeys, Wilson said, but wild ones don't see water as a danger.
"They have their wild instincts intact," Wilson said. "It probably never occurred to them not to swim out."
He added, "They probably looked over the fence and said, 'Hmmm, this is home.' They are wild. They know how to forage for food and they know how to avoid predators."
Said Salisbury, "That amazed me." Nothing like having an animal to make money from but be amazed at it's creativity.....
A group of patases in Naples has lived on one side of a moat for decades, never venturing into the water, Salisbury said.
The same is true for colonies in European zoos, he said.
"I guess these guys living in Puerto Rico learned how to swim."
When captured, they will be put into a more secure enclosure, off the island. "One strike and you're out," Salisbury said.WHO DOES THAT REMIND ME OF??????
Search parties (you're paying for !!!)were still having a tough go of it this afternoon, but the dragnet around the colony was tightening.

It gets better. By 2008, visitors will get up close and personal with the animals, taking safaris on foot, SUV, boat, train or air. The zoo welcomed its 10-millionth visitor May 21, a soldier on a family outing before heading to Iraq.

I have to make a short note. Before all of this got started. When I realized that people who are fabulously wealthy get lots of attention from scumbags I never really looked too hard at others. That's THEIR world. Live and let live.
