From that stupid description are we to assume one is black and one is white, or two blacks with light and dark complexions, or two whites with dark and light complexions. Any chance they are Chinese? How the heck is any perp going to be ID'd by anyone but the victim with these descriptions?

You're not meant to see someone walking down the street and see he fits this description, know he is the "perp" and "ID" him . The descriptions are more aimed at people who have reason to suspect an acquaintance. Then the description can support or contradict their suspicion. It's just one piece of the puzzle. No description can be comprehensive enough that you could recognize the person from it. Even police composite sketches can't do that.

I imagine that the St. Pete times is reporting all of the facts they were given by the TPD. It's probably the TPD that doesn't want to upset anyone by naming a race. Either that, or conversely, they just assume that everyone else has already assumed the race of these fellows. The lack of information is not the Times' fault.

I agree 100 percent, Al, but to be fair, Jim didn't say he blamed the Times for the inadequate description. And on the issue of race, it's possible they were of mixed race and the victim -- who was going through the most traumatic experience of her life -- couldn't tell for sure. In any case, you're right, both the police and the Times would want to provide the most complete description they could without being inaccurate, so there's no reason we should think they are withholding details.

That's quite a stretch, old coot. More likely the young victim was so traumatized or so ashamed she couldn't bring her self to tell her mother right away. A lot of rapes do not get reported at all for that reason, even when the victim is an adult.
