You can't Jail the Truth
Howard Zinn and others star in "You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train" an amazing film narrated by Matt Damon (he's climbed close to the top of my list of sexy) and produced by Deb Ellis and Denis Mueller.
He is also of (among others) "A People's History of the United States" Undoubtedly a must-read.
"Before Michael Moore, there was Howard Zinn." Boston Herald
"A Striking Portrait of a truly great American." (and human) CBS RADIO
One of my best 'memory cards' reminded me that Howard said, "Suddenly I spun around and it took a few moments to realize that I had been struck very hard in the head and was bleeding. I then lapsed into unconsciousness. This certainly changed my outlook on Democracy."
He's such a gentle, handsome, brilliant man, accompanied by his tiny, beautiful wife and long the denizen of Harvard U., Boston where he frequents Eliot's Cafe which he drolly informs you is merely a 'dunkin' donuts' with very subtle nuances of the dunkin'. Apparently Harvard wasn't down with any dunkin donuts signage. Howard relates that many folks meet him at the eliot's. This is very cool. I'm going to hang out there for a week someday and find Howard and touch MY idea of greatness.
Here's something you shouldn't miss GO READ IT!!! which is a caption (a long caption, eh?) from the introduction of 'you can't be neutral on a moving train'. I taped the whole movie because I forget and my notes only go so far. You don't want to miss a word as he patiently displays HOW TO CLAIM A POWER THAT NO GOVERNMENT CAN HOPE TO SUPPRESS.
An evening with Howard is the total BATH one longs for after watching the neo-Republicans and their frat-boy-king-george piss on the American people and the Constitution of the United States of America EVERY MOMENT of EVERY DAY.
This is why so many people like dunkin donuts coffee??? Boston? Howard Zinn? I'll have to try it. I only drink coffee for medicinal purposes ... so, I have not really gotten around like some.
An excerpt:
During the Gulf War of 1991, I gave a talk to a high school assembly in Massachusetts, a private school where the students came from affluent families and were said to be "95 percent in favor of the war." I spoke my mind, and to my surprise got a great round of applause. But in a classroom afterward, meeting with a small group of the students, a girl who had been staring at me with obvious hostility throughout the discussion, suddenly spoke up, her voice registering her anger: "Why do you live in this country?"
I felt a pang. It was a question I knew was often thought, but unspoken. It was the issue of patriotism, of loyalty to one's country, which arises again and again, whether someone is criticizing foreign policy, or evading military service, or refusing to pledge allegiance to the flag.
I tried to explain, that my love was for the country, for the people, not for whatever government happened to be in power. To believe in democracy was to believe in the principles of the Declaration of Independence--that government is an artificial creation, established by the people to defend the equal right of everyone to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I interpreted "everyone" to include men, women, children all over the world, who have a right to life, not to be taken away by their own government or by ours.
When a government betrays those democratic principles, it is being unpatriotic. Love of democracy would then require opposing your government. It would require being "out of order."
The publication of A People's History led to requests from around the country for me to speak. And so, there I was in Kalamazoo, that evening in 1992, speaking, not just on Columbus, but on why telling the truth about Columbus was important for us, here and now, 1992, Kalamazoo. I was really not interested in Columbus, but in the issues raised by his interaction with the native Americans: is it possible for people, overcoming history, to live together, with equality, with dignity, today?
At the end of my talk, someone asked a question which has been put to me many times in different ways. "Given the depressing news of what is happening in the world, you seem surprisingly optimistic. What gives you hope?"
Go read it.
Go see the film.
As well, I agree with his take on history. Even as a young child I was lulled and bored and very aware that we were NOT getting the real story. I had an awesome class while younger. The teacher was a recent immigrant from Czechoslovokia. Flawless English. HOT. My best friend was VERY bad in that class. I was distracted from her badness by his revelations. Guess what? They teach them in Czech. that THEIR way is the best and on and on and on. What an eye-opener
At college level besides discovering that they teach the SAME SHIT over and over again I sat (to evaluate) through five or so different history classes. One guy taught it by wars, another by property settlements (sometimes similar to wars) another guy taught it by the map, still another taught it by mostly slavery. Truth to tell they should have him teaching black Americ an history NOT American history. Then again, not all slaves were black OR white. Or Latino. Or Irish. Or Scottish. Sumbitch we owe a ton of reparation all over the place. It is what it is. Not ME, I and my family did not live in this country when those bad people were doing those bad things. Anyway, in my mind I remembered the most and got the most sense from the guy who taught by immigration and property settlement. The wars were hard but informative, the black dude was by far the SMARTEST MAN and he turned me on to a book on my hero, Thomas Jefferson. I read it cover to cover. I read it in his class. I read it EVERYWHERE. I still have it. American Sphinx.
I'll always take classes.
The thing is when I left his class I didn't have any knowledge of the Gold Rush and many other extraordinarily, historically significant events in early American history. He never mentioned them. I did know some things that were on his agenda and thank god his agenda was actually very decent if a bit of tunnel-vision.
That's not true of all teachers and certainly NOT all college profs. Mind what these brown shirts are teaching.
Go check out Howard. It's like having a long bubble bath in squeaky-clean-lemon-scented o ethics and hardcore humanity. You'll come away restored. Armor fully tacked on.
FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT.
FUCK THE REST OF THEM
