Special Session Postponed: Act Now to Save PIP and KidCare
September 8, 2007



Legislative leaders announced Wednesday that they are postponing the special session scheduled to begin September 18, citing a lack of consensus between the House, Senate and Governor on how to make necessary budget cuts.
In the letter released by Senate President Ken Pruitt and House Speaker Marco Rubio, they indicated that no "agreement on a framework for action" has been reached, but stated that they "remain confident that an agreement will be reached and that we will have a fall session."
As you know, the legislature failed to address some very important issues during the regular and special sessions earlier this year. No-fault and PIP auto insurance laws are expiring, putting millions more uninsured drivers on Florida roads and leaving accident victims without any minimum guaranteed health care. And Florida's half-million uninsured children are still waiting for the passage of the KidCare reform bill, which will prevent Florida from losing hundreds of millions of federal matching funds intended to provide health insurance to kids whose families make too much to receive Medicaid but not enough to afford private insurance.
Tell the Legislature to Get the Job Done Right This Time
This delay gives us more time to focus attention on these issues. Over the Labor Day weekend, we collected more than 1700 signatures from Floridians asking legislative leaders to expand the scope of the special session to take up this urgent legislation.
