My problem is with the 'thought crime' sentence. This guy had never been arrested before. Now he'll die in prison. FROM A TEN DAY INVESTIGATION and a THOUGHT CRIME. This and the racism train need to slow their roll. I have more thoughts on this but I want to go do my real life for awhile. later gang

TAMPA - A Gibsonton man arrested today was a distributor of "some of the worst [images] and some of the youngest victims" of child pornography that veteran Hillsborough County investigators have seen, including images "as young as infant," sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said.

Carl Minerd Cocking, 36, was charged with 45 counts of distributing child pornography. Deputies say he distributed pornography on Internet chat rooms.

"These are things that he had downloaded and was using to distribute to other pedophiles," Carter said.

This is Cocking's third arrest in the past 14 months related to children and computers.

Cocking's lawyer, Roger Futerman, said all three arrests stem from a law enforcement investigation that began in May 2008. He said Cocking has been actively seeking treatment since the first arrest.

"He's already multiple times admitted his wrongs," Futerman said.

In June 2008, Cocking was accused of traveling to Brandon to engage in sex with someone he thought was a 12-year-old girl, authorities said. He was released from Orient Road Jail on June 11 after posting $2,000 bail.

Cocking used Internet chat rooms and e-mail from May 30, 2008, to June 10, 2008, to solicit "a parent of a child to consent to participation of such a child in any sexual act," a criminal report affidavit states.

Cocking traveled from his Gibsonton home to Brandon on June 10, 2008, to "meet who he believes is a 12-year-old female to engage in sexual conduct," the affidavit states.

An analysis of Cocking's computer seized in June 2008 found 100 images of child pornography, and he was arrested in November. Cocking was arrested at his home, 6329 Magnolia Trails Lane, Gibsonton, a criminal arrest affidavit states.

The cases from June 2008 and November are pending.

Cases against cocking won't go to trial, Futerman said, because Cocking plans to plead guilty in court.

"It's a very serious crime, and it's a crime that he's going to be punished for," Futerman said.

Cocking is married and the father of a 14-year-old girl who lives out of state, Futerman said. His wife continues to live with him, and he has been getting psychological and sexual abuse counseling.

Asked whether Cocking had ever been a victim of sexual abuse, Futerman said there were "some mitigating circumstances" but did not discuss specifics.

Futerman questioned whether it was right that his client was arrested three times following one investigation. He also questioned whether sending Cocking to prison would solve the man's problems.
