UPDATE: I'd be remiss if I didn't add Michael Hussey's post here. Truth is I read it a few hours ago and it sent me off reading ... especially one of his commenters .... well, at least the (COMMENTER) has a good sense of humor even if he misses the problem of someone being tasered for asking a question for too long. We got close to this in Tampa FL, if you recall. The police claim he acted completely different once the cameras were gone. Yknow, I just don't BELIEVE them. When I watch this and how the female officer stands to be sure all is 'clear' --- I just think to myself they've been watching WAY TOO MUCH violence on tv. And, they're perping it on US.

Personally, I don't CARE if this guy was promoting himself or anything else. I haven't seen enough video and I wasn't there. He got these questions OUT THERE and that's good enough.

Naomi Wolf quite rightly identifies this as a turning point for America. Will we give in or fight back?

I see the fear of the govmint right here in Hillsborough County. I mean, MOST of the County and City employees are stalking me and no one says a fucking word. One stupid bitch even calls me names, perhaps jealous of the attention I'm garnering.... LOL !!!

I think these town-halls are ABSOLUTELY IDEAL for this type of confrontation because that is just what it is. That's why they're trying to downplay his words as a prank.

I did the same thing at a Tampa 'townhall' about a year back. I asked Mayor Pam Iorio how it was that the City of Tampa had the money for some fluff crap they are supplying (fireworks, a millon new ugly palm trees) but has no money to fund the indigent care and to take care of the young gentleman who was mentally and physically challenged who had just been at the other microphone. She probably WANTED to have me arrested but instead she quickly blew it off on the county. The whole room burst into applause. Many students were present. They clapped first. Then the whole room. I didn't expect that. After me, the questions got a little harder. You could see the frustration once the mask slipped. Yep.
As I left the place, the # of officials who inserted themselves into my path in order to try to get my name was astounding. That, for a simple question. Guess they'll teach me to ask a question.

People of Tampa: Stand up before there's nothing left to stand for.

Ms. Wolf, whom you may remember as the author of 10 easy steps to Fascism, the END OF AMERICA and several other books refers to this event with THIS STUDENT as a recognizable shock moment in the annals of a closing society. A very ordinary-looking American student -- Andrew Meyer, 21, at the University of Florida - was tasered by police when he asked a question of Senator John Kerry about the impeachment of President George Bush. His arms were pinned and as he tried to keep speaking he was shocked -- in spite of begging not to be hurt. A stunning piece of footage but unfortunately, historically, a very familiar and even tactical moment.

It is an iconic turning point and it will be remembered as the moment at which America either fought back or yielded. This violence against a student is different from violence against protesters in the anti-war movement of 30 years ago because of the power the president has now to imprison innocent U.S. citizens for months in isolation. And because, as I have explained elsewhere, we are not now in a situation in which 'the pendulum' can easily swing back. That taser was directed at the body of a young man, but it is we ourselves, and our Constitution, who received the full force of the shock.

There is a chapter in my new book, The End of America, entitled "Recast Criticism as 'Espionage' and Dissent as 'Treason,'" that conveys why this moment is the horrific harbinger it is. I argue that strategists using historical models to close down an open society start by using force on 'undesirables,' 'aliens,' 'enemies of the state,' and those considered by mainstream civil society to be untouchable; in other times they were, of course, Jews, Gypsies, Communists, homosexuals. Then, once society has been acculturated to that use of force, the 'blurring of the line' begins and the parameters of criminalized speech are extended -- the definition of 'terrorist' expanded -- and the use of force begins to be deployed in HIGHLY VISIBLE, STRATEGIC and VISUALLY SHOCKING WAYS against people that others see and identify with as ordinary citizens.
And, as the little voice in the wind-tunnel warns repeatedly: It's COMING.
