In an exciting development, Congress is now considering a ban on most touch-screen voting machines—which would effectively end the era of insecure electronic voting. It's an amendment to the Holt paper voting bill being considered this week.1Just today, the New York Times came out in favor of a touch-screen ban, saying: "There is still time before the bill becomes law to add a ban on touch-screen voting." The amendment would only allow one touch-screen voting machine—also known as a direct record electronic (DRE) machine—in each polling place in order to meet accessibility requirements. All other DREs would be banned.1 The amendment is inspired by California's recent decision to ban all DREs except one per polling place.3 California's decision followed a "top-to-bottom review" of DREs, which revealed many security flaws.Today's New York Times editorial reads:
The House is considering a bill sponsored by Rush Holt, Democrat of New Jersey, that could come to a vote as soon as today that would make electronic voting both more reliable and less prone to fraud.
