That’s what retiree John Nirenberg could say after walking from Boston to Washington , hoping to get our House leader to listen to a veteran, to listen to her Party rank and file, to listen to the majority of Americans—to listen to reason about impeachment. So far, he’s heard only silence.

What Nirenberg has said is this: “I’ve written the letters, spoken with my Congressman, and been patient while the Democrats settled into their leadership role. I hoped they would do the right thing. B ut they haven’t.” (see John’s letter to Pelosi.)And so John Nirenberg began walking, for 40 days and 40 nights.

He knew that heroes such as Florida’s Robert Wexler, on the inside in his role on the House Judiciary Committee, might need a little added visibility on the outside, to remind some of our Democrats that they took an oath to protect and defend the Constitution.

Along the way, he picked up walking partners, crippling blisters, and a few hundred thousand friends to sign his petition to Pelosi. He hoped that he could also pick up a few minutes on Nancy Pelosi’s calendar.

Sixty year-old former teacher and Air Force Veteran John Nirenberg to complete 500 mile Impeachment March from Boston to Washington, DC with rally at National Archives on Saturday January 12 at 12:30 PM.
Somewhere on the desk of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi lies a letter that begins:
"Dear Speaker Pelosi:My name is John Nirenberg. I left Boston on December 1st and am currently on my way to your office, walking the entire distance, hoping to meet with you in early January." On Saturday, January 12, the sixty year-old former American History teacher, college dean, and Air Force veteran will complete his 500 mile walk from Boston to Washington; a "pilgrimage" as he puts it, which he hopes to conclude with a conversation with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi about impeachment.
In a video on his home page, http://www.marchinmyname.org Nirenberg looks every bit the professor, wearing wire rimmed glasses, sitting on a desk in front of a wall hung with political posters from the past thirty years. Describing himself as a non-activist, “life-long servant of the establishment” and “believer in the system,” he goes on to list impeachable offenses by President Bush and Vice President Cheney, such as conducting illegal wiretaps, condoning torture, and using presidential signing statements to undermine Congress’ legislative powers.
On his march down U.S Route 1, Nirenberg says that he has encountered far more supporters than opponents, estimating that he has seen about “ninety percent thumbs versus ten percent middle fingers up.” He has also encountered counter demonstrators, an impeachment opponent who stole his sign in Pennsylvania, and seventeen mile walks while enduring severe blisters and “screaming aches and pains” that required him to wear knee braces.
Why has Nirenberg chosen to spend his retirement savings this way? Because, as he explains to Speaker Pelosi in his letter, the stakes are high:
If Congress does not utilize the Constitutional remedy of impeachment, which was designed for precisely this kind of situation, how can Bush and Cheney be held accountable for any of their lies and crimes? If Congress does not open impeachment hearings, if no act of censure is introduced, then the courts, the people, and history will clearly assume that Congress approved of the entire spectrum of illegal acts, abuses, and immorality perpetrated by this administration.
Supporters are encouraged to join him for the final few miles of his walk, which will end with a 12:30 pm rally in front of the National Archives, home of the U.S. constitution. Those who plan to walk six miles will gather at 9:00 am at the National Arboretum, and those who want to walk about a mile to the National Archives will gather at 11:30 am in front of Union Station.
