First of all I have to highlight something that made me realize that if Edwards (I'll put him first to help balance off the MSM preoccupation with Obama and the other Democrat) and/or Obama were not married men and say I was a lil looser than I am ... I would happily participate in sexually educating them. Fresh off his second-place finish in Iowa - a state widely viewed as a must win for Edwards - the former North Carolina senator is barn-storming New Hampshire, crowing about his momentum and brushing off Hillary Rodham Clinton as the dead candidate walking. He lags well behind Barack Obama and Clinton in polls and money but insists it's now basically a two-person race between Obama and him.
"Among the major candidates for the nomination, one represents the status quo, and two represent change. I think it's fair to say Senator Obama represents change. He's a good guy," Edwards told an enthusiastic audience of several hundred people at Keene State College on Sunday. "I think the issue of change versus status quo, that's over."
Plenty of pundits questioned how much longer Edwards could stay in the race without having won Iowa, and having barely beaten Clinton there.
But to see Edwards' sharp and confident debate performance Saturday night in New Hampshire or his fiery, well-received big-business bashing on the stump Sunday, is to see a candidate who looks like he has no intention of going away.
The former trial lawyer campaigned alongside a family he represented whose daughter was badly injured by a defective pool drain. Also joining were the parents of 17-year-old Nataline Sarkisyan, who died in December after her insurance company declined to cover a liver transplant.
"This is the cause of my life, and it is not going to end," he drawled after 30 minutes of bashing greedy corporations. "It will not end in New Hampshire on Tuesday, and I am in this campaign until the convention and to the White House. I have no intention of stopping."
The old Edwards strategy called for winning Iowa and riding the momentum. The new strategy calls for waiting on Clinton to fizzle and then facing Obama one on one. He has no reluctance playing tough with Clinton.
When the former first lady questioned Obama's health care plan in a combative, nationally televised debate Saturday night, Edwards pounced: "Every time he speaks out for change, every time I fight for change, the forces of status quo are going to attack - every single time."
Clinton looked livid.
Edwards pounced again Sunday when Clinton campaign spokesman Jay Carson dismissed Edwards' campaigning with the Sarkisyan family, saying Clinton preferred to use anecdotes about people she had helped rather than read about in newspapers.
"This campaign doesn't seem to have a conscience," Edwards said of the Clinton team.
"His unfortunate attacks are unfortunate and sound very desperate," responded Clinton campaign spokesman Mo Elleithee.
In Keene on Sunday, voters repeatedly brushed off the Iowa results and said they were considering either Obama or Edwards.
Though Obama just won an overwhelmingly white state, several voters wondered whether an African-American Democrat could win in November.
"Change is going to come either with Barack Obama or Edwards, but you can't just vote for change. You have to vote for winning," said Fred Goldberg, a fourth-grade teacher from Richmond, N.H.
Recent polls in New Hampshire show a neck-and-neck race between Clinton and Obama and Edwards. Losing New Hampshire could prove to be a mortal blow to Clinton, but she and Obama are expected to have the money and organization to compete.
Senior Edwards adviser Joe Trippi said that in an election about change, Clinton is the one who should be written off after Iowa, not Edwards.
"She took third last time I checked. We took second," he said. "She spent about $7-million on TV; we spent about $2.5-million."
Caucuses and primaries ultimately are about winning delegates to the national convention and by that measure, it's a dead heat: Obama so far has 16, Clinton has 15, and Edwards 14.
