Proclaimed 'Banner Year' For Prosecutions

Federal prosecutions in the Middle District of Florida are forecast to be 15 percent higher than last year, according to a research organization that tracks government statistics.
The latest data from the Justice Department show that during the first 11 months this fiscal year, there were 1,881 new prosecutions in the Middle District of Florida, the district that includes the Tampa area.
The report comes after the U.S. Attorney's Office in Tampa announced a "banner year" for prosecutions, with an increase in indictments over last year and $2 million more in seized assets than last year.
Then-U.S. Attorney Robert O'Neill pointed to three factors that led to the upswing in indictments and money seized: a good relationship with local law enforcement agencies, the hiring of 25 new prosecutors over the past year, and the more tenured prosecutors "taking stock of what they have" and realizing they have a good job and have a chance to make a difference.
If prosecutions continue at the same pace, the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse forecasts that the prosecutions total will be 2,052 for this fiscal year, compared with 1,780 last year.
The top spot for prosecutions here goes to drug cases, which made up nearly 33 percent of prosecutions in the district in the first 11 months of this year.
Immigration crime was the second-largest category of prosecutions in district. Those cases made up more than 24 percent of prosecutions in the first 11 months of the fiscal year.Immigration matters accounted for 54 percent of all new cases filed in August in U.S. Federal Court, according to the clearinghouse, which is based at Syracuse University.

Unconstitutional, looks like you are talking to yourself as no one has commented back to you. Neither Denny, myself or anyone else who has done the job for 20+ years have ever said that the occupation was perfect. What you have never realized is in the larger picture, it is pretty good here compared to the rest of the country. Tampa and Hillsborough County will handle over 1 million calls this year. The very few problems is all that you ever look at. Most other posters on here are smart enough to look at the big picure over-all. Maybe you should catch up to the rest of us.

Scott, nobody else was awake when UNCON was talking to himself. But in reality many cops have a really vague idea of what the law IS and they react on what they think the law SHOULD BE. Arrest me for filming a traffic stop, I need the money.! .... I'm OLD, I remember when it was the BAD guys that wore masks. ;-{

I'm glad they are prosecuting more of the drug & immigration crimes. There needs to be a loud and clear message sent & received so that eventually it will get through some pretty thick skulls. I want to live in a safer society. I don't want to be afraid to drive in the neighborhood I grew up in but I certainly am. I went to 1st & 2nd grade at Sulpher Springs Elem. You wouldn't catch me driving through that hood these days! The people who live in those areas deserve to feel safe and the children shouldn't be watching hookers & crack dealers on the corners while they are outside playing. Prosecute and make them serve time for their crimes. Stop the insanity of just passing them through the system time & time again.

Prosecuting the people and keeping them locked up is for sure not the answer. You think our government would be more proud to drag out some stats on rehabilitation or diversion programs that are impacting certain areas or other programs which actually work towards changing behaviors rather than locking people up for simple drug offenses. It's very telling that our government celebrates the arrest and prosecution of it's citizens rather than deal with the causes of the issues they claim to be dealing with.

The lesson in prosection & sentencing is that it finally teaches what was obviously not learned well in the home while a youth. There are consequences for your actions. Life is the result of the choices YOU make! You do the crime, you do the time. If you keep your nose clean & obey the laws then you get to stay out of the courthouses & jail system. It's pretty simple. Just like if you behave in school you can stay out of the Principal's office.My husband & I had a disagreement about something minor a child had done in school & a teacher told the child not to do it again. He said that other kids were doing it so why did they single out his child. I told him what a horrible response as a parent. Instead you should support the teacher and remind the child that these are the rules, the child knows the rules and it doesn't matter if the other kids are getting away with it. You are my child and you will obey the rules. If I learn from the school you aren't then don't worry about what kind of trouble you get into at school. You be in deep doo doo at home! It worked quite well for both of my kids. They were never sent to the office and are college graduates. They knew momma was not playing about this.Most kids today have no respect for adults because they are not taught the simple value. They only know they attitudes and just how far will that get them in life?

Scott.....wasn;t it the basic foundation of our laws, that it is better to let a thousand guilty people free, rather than to unlawfully arrest one innocent person ? ........that is the very theory that all of our laws were founded upon........You sir seem to have the opposite theory of law. You sir, believe that you should arrest without hope of conviction and that is against all legal ethics......I understand your point.......but that theory is exactly what is wrong with the police officers today......We do not live in a Nazi police state.

Uncon, please show me in any statement that I have ever made that I believe the cops should arrest without any hope of conviction? You won't find it because I have never said anything close to that or many other things that you accuse either Denny or I of saying. I don't know what this obsession you have about law enforcement and your unreasonable expectations that they have to be 100% perfect all the time. Not me, Denny or anyone else has ever claimed perfection. Then again, I do not know of any perfection in any occupation including P.I's. What I do know is that our area has some of the best leo's you will find in our entire country. We do not have the problems here like in Detroit, Chicago, New Orleans, L.A ect... You need to get a life and try to be perfect yourself. When you get there, then you can start tossing stones. If your human though, you will never be perfect either so keep the stones in your pocket.
