Leaders lacking, people need to act

Surprise, surprise! Wal-Mart will try to "bully" its way into yet another community that doesn't want them.

I watched the Hernando County Commission hearing when the Wal-Mart proposed for Barclay Avenue was voted down by commissioners. I was taken aback by the way the Wal-Mart attorney treated our residents. (Shame on you, Chairman Jeff Stabins, for not reining her in!)

However, every citizen who spoke used common sense to argue against the Wal-Mart and its attorney continuously asked "Are you a traffic, public safety, health expert," etc., in a very condescending, demeaning and sarcastic way. It was if she was telling our citizens that what they had to say was not important.

Well, here's to you Wal-Mart! Even the village idiot knows there already is too much traffic at Powell Road and Barclay Avenue. And if the road is widened, there still will be too much traffic without your store. Across from a school? Even the village idiot knows children and traffic are a lethal cocktail. Add two other schools in the neighborhood, and the likelihood of our children being hurt goes way up. Add 6,000 homes in the immediate area and the chance of accidents and pedestrians being killed goes way up. The village idiot also knows this is a safety hazard and many accidents are waiting to happen.

And, now, County Line Road and Mariner Boulevard. It's SOPDL (same ol' problems, different location).

The village idiot also knows we have a severe water shortage in our county and any more major development is only going to exacerbate our already existing problem. Furthermore, Hernando County does not need any more minimum wage jobs. Nor do we need another Wal-Mart, or any other "mart" or supercenter.

There currently are two petitions being circulated throughout the state that will change Florida's Constitution and mandate voter approval of changes to local growth management. I urge everyone to sign the petitions.

In the meantime, drastic times call for drastic measures. Our employees, elected officials, volunteers, etc., are not looking out for us. In order for them to hear us, we must begin good old-fashioned 1960s demonstrations. We must stand in front of bulldozers and wrecking balls, and hug and climb many trees until our employees "get it." If you can't walk, stand or climb, start writing letters. Many letters!

The consequences of major development are putting a strain on where we live and we must put a stop to it. Even the village idiot is sure of that.
