The Representative from Vermont has the Floor

Besides Subpoena-ing the head CUEball Cheney, Senator Leahy is also working VERY VERY hard to restore the writ of habeus corpus. This, as I hope you know; is why you are allowed out of jail once you find yourself in one. As well all should know:

the 'corrections' gimmick is all about money. THINK of the money they earned arresting, jailing, bailing, prosecuting and sentencing all of Daniel Brock's victims. Most of his victims are probably still on probation and unable to drive and support their families. MORE money. Where's all that money go? Well, I can answer that. It goes to buy MORE correction officers like Daniel Brock. I shouldn't say this but I think he looks a lil bit crazy and if he pulled me over I'd probably call for backup. When peoples' eyes don't blink it makes me nervous. LOL !!!

Think of the THREE TIMES AS MANY that the Tampa Police are arresting (two of em anyway) ... Then, think if it was someone you know or yourself. Please support Senator Leahy as he tries to correct the mistake made by Congress. I signed on to his petition which is making progress and he is asking us to notify others.

Thank you for taking the time to email your home-state Senators, urging support for my legislation to restore the right of habeas corpus to millions of legal residents of the United States. As a result of your help and thousands of other friends like you, our bill is gaining momentum in Congress.
But we still have more work to do.
Yesterday, thousands of Americans rallied on Capitol Hill to demand that the Bush Administration end its abuse of the Constitution and restore our nation's proud tradition of protecting civil liberties and respecting the rule of law.
I was proud to join these patriotic Americans at yesterday's rally. It's so crucial that we build the grassroots coast-to-coast support we need to restore the rule of law.

As you know, of all the rights guaranteed by our Constitution, none is as important as habeas corpus, which gives any person who has been jailed the right to challenge his or her detention before a fair and impartial court. For centuries, habeas corpus has been a powerful tool for protecting freedom. Today, that right has been stripped away from millions of hard-working legal residents of the United States.
Last year, Congress committed an historic mistake by suspending the Great Writ of habeas corpus in the Military Commissions Act. Like the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, the elimination of habeas rights was an action driven by fear and a stain on America's reputation in the world.
The Military Commissions Act eliminated habeas corpus permanently, for any non-citizen labeled an enemy combatant -- even someone “awaiting” determination of that status. The sweep of this habeas provision goes far beyond the few hundred detainees currently held at Guantanamo Bay, and includes an estimated 12 million lawful permanent residents in the United States today. These are people who work and pay taxes, people who abide by our laws and should be entitled to fair treatment. Under this law, any of these people can be detained, forever, without any ability to challenge their detention in court.
We simply cannot leave 12 million legal residents of the United States at risk of arbitrary detention. It violates the fundamental values of this nation.
That is why I am asking you to take one more step in this fight. We need to build even more support in Congress to restore habeas corpus and respect the rule of law.

It is times like these that test our character as a nation.
It is easy to protect rights in times of peace and prosperity. But it shows America's real character to stay true to our values when enemies abroad seek to harm us.
