Okay, this is the THIRD rerun of this story about the school-board member dropping her adopted child back off. This one is loaded with the same full story adding some plaintive details of sleeping on the couch, need to plaster walls and etc.....
It's all VERY transparent.

Here's what she thinks would help. Please NOTICE there is NOTHING in 'her wish list for children' that is REMOTELY helpful towards a child. ONLY interest is in letting adoptive parents off the hook from the promise they make to love the child. They fell in love with his shy smile but apparently NOT SO MUCH. Please, he works for Honeywell and she's raking up schoolboard dough and who knows what else? They can't help this child monetarily??

ALL CHILDREN NEED HELP. Families are dismantled without a whit of concern by the DCF.

Please note all her wonderful ideas for 'helping the children'. We've already determined that she's a christian fundie and very judgmental .... you'll notice the 'reader' comments this time were quickly skewed in 'her favor' Very little negative. I've watched the St Pete Times pull this trick previously more than once. One time that's real clear was over the Mayor Baker slashing the homeless tents. They kept rerunning that until enough of his cronies could jump on and say atta boy ricky. One less now that John Bryan offed himself after molesting HIS adopted daughters. Speaking of which: Look at all the places we find Mayor Ricky. Advocating the actions of a child-molester, crying at his funeral, lauding his virtue, hushing down the story on the firefighters covering up criminal records involving coaches and children and also rubbing elbows with everyone making money off st pete.....

Trying to help

Less than 1 percent of infant adoptions are terminated, experts say. Eighty percent of adoptions of older children with special needs are successful.

To help foster children with attachment issues - and their families - Nancy Bostock suggests these reforms to the foster care system:

- Infants and toddlers in foster care should be moved into permanent, stable homes as soon as possible. (been down THIS road about a million times, ask Karen Givers)

- Foster care workers should be trained in attachment issues. (or at least trained, been here before, too)

- Potential parents should be told about attachment issues their child might face. (this should be a BIG DUH>>>>> )

- After adoption, parents should have access to respite care, out-of-home care and mental health services for their children. The state should continue to fund those services, as it does for foster children. (all parents and caregivers should have access to these services for children who are more than a handful)

- If an adoption has to be terminated, parents should not be charged with abandonment and should be allowed to maintain contact with the child. Parents should not have to pay child support for a child sent back to the state.

And I agree with Tony: If she can't handle this she needs to stay away from schools. We've got enough problems in public schools.

You can always tell when these GOP'rs and fundies are trying to run something up the flagpole. Don't fall for the rotten sentiment.

It's long overdue for the state to finally acknowledge what adoptive parents have endured. I know of many similiar situations and the parents were always made out to be the dysfunctional one. Thank you for opening the eyes of those who might help.

Often adopted kids will push people away to prove themselves right - that you WILL give up on them & that no one will love them forever. Psychs make it worse - "experts" cant agree and do a lot of damage. There are other self-help solutions.

At four years old he had been placed in over 7 foster care homes. Gee, how well he foster care system works. Because of the sheer number of children being born of drug addicts and boozers - perhaps orphanages should be reconsidered.

This is more than a Florida issue. This is a national issue for families adopting children with special needs! Feds DO provide money for post adopt services, but states allocate how that is used. Parents then have to FIGHT for it!

Our family adopted a child with a history of exposure to cocaine and alcohol during the pregnancy and despite years of good environment and family support, we ended up in the same situation as this poor woman and her family. i feel for her! i know!

Thank you for running this story. We adopted our 15 year old daughter at age 7 and we were aware of her abusive past and got her counseling but we were not prepared for the breakdown that accompanied adolesence. Information, help, many need it!

There is no hope for these kids. They are permanently damaged. Most will end up in jail or dead. The damage caused in the first year of life plus in the womb can not be fixed. These kids lack the ability to love. It's just missing.

I experienced the same kind of problem with my adoptive son. It tears everyone apart. I got blamed for being a bad mother. I still think I did something wrong, and his life is hell. Environment is not the cure-all it is cracked up to be.

This is truly sad. I can understand how difficult it must be to balance the desire to help one kid, while protecting the others. The State has definitely failed these kids.

is where I suspected this was going: ADOPTIVE MOTHER'S HEARTBREAK is WELL UNDERSTOOD.

Okay, first of all -- NO, it's not. My comments (no surprise) did NOT make it on to teh St Pete Times website. But, Loretta's did and she stated that children didn't COME with a guarantee. You love them and take care of them or you don't. So, Nancy Bostock had this child she adopted when he was four years old. He's barely nine and already he has spent 15 months in state-sponsored care. (I'm sure THAT created another serial killer: Boatwright, et. al.)

AND, if you read carefully you see that she's asking for help for MORE STATE-SPONSORED OUT OF HOME CARE. How about if she adopts ten more children and can't 'deal' with any of them?

By now you see where this is going. I hope.

DCF and the YMCA collect all these state funds : YMCA collecting IN THE MILLIONS. They approve all of these WONDERFUL adoptive families. Are you with me??

The adoptive families can't DEAL WITH THEM so by the time folks asking for more help for adoptive families get done we'll have all these children "ADOPTED" yet they'll be RIGHT SMACK BACK in state run group homes.

Was this a long fucking way around the block collect a few million and still have the kids 'adopted' but farmed out to group homes, or WHAT??

If they're 'good' we'll keep a few in our homes. Some are good cooks and soccer players, no doubt.

Not once is any mention made of where the REAL parents are. What caused their family to collapse. Where this child's problems stem from. Why he ended up in foster care.

Further: Loretta in her quaint way is CORRECT. Kids DO NOT come with guarantees. Even the ones BORN TO YOU.

This is a continuum of the lack of familial continuity fostered by the government, Florida, JEB, and the former HRS cum Department (which destroys) Children and Families.

Where was the help for this boy eight years ago??
WHere was teh help for his REAL parents??

"It's not the social service's fault, the parent's fault or the Department of Children and Families', but I do think the state is going to have to come up with a plan to assist parents who have adopted traumatized children who have significant issues down the road."

This stinks like MADD TO ME.

Set it up under a loving face or a grieving family. Bob Butterworth in charge so that no attorney will have the guts to buck DCF, children removed from homes left and right, make a problem? NO PROBLEM. We have just the group home for you but you won't be on the foster care rolls. THere are TOO MANY stories out there of people who have done nothing wrong but have had their children taken. AND NOW, the state will have plenty of funds to medicate, restrain, punish --- 'treat' these 'traumatized' children.

Hey, Charlie and co. We're NOT FOOLED.

Also, this bullshit about it taking TOO LONG to restore civil rights and felons STILL WONT BE VOTING by 2009?? That is just it: BULLSHIT.

Same as you would YOUR OWN child. If you'll notice that's why I kept emphasizing the 'real' parent. I know there are wonderful adoptive families who love the children as their own.

What if this had happened with Ms. Bostock's 'own' child???? hmmmmm??? Would she have found the money/time/heart/resources to DEAL with it?

What if her 'real' child caught some trauma from this 'adopted' child? Will she also GIVE THIS REAL child up so it can get help??

This whole thing is such bullshit.

I call for SUPER FUCKING HUMAN oversight of DCF and the children they are removing from families. NOW !!! Before parents are repaid for unpopulare political opinions by having their children removed and then 'adopted' but really farmed in to a state home.

DOn't pretend this can't happen. Or hasn't happened.

Unless the family can hire good attorneys like some who will say it is the fault of the parents' own abuse as a child or the one who left three under the age of nine alone with no elec? ??

My heart breaks. In many countries, children are given up everyday to orphanages 4 health $. It be nice if we had the answers and could solve all problems ourselves, and $ was never an issue. All family members needed safety & healing.

I am not passing judgement - my own son was a handful, so much that a school system released him as did many preschools. He was a terror to his sister but never did I think of letting go, he was special, so don't tell me I don't understand. I DO!!

WHen a child needs help and you can't afford it, insurance won't cover it - THEN what CAN you do? Especially if the child is a danger to the family? Kids like this are beyond what most of us have experienced. All choices suck in cases like this.

What many people don't seem to understand is that many of these kids that come out of the foster care system are damaged, not only by drug exposure, but by the very system that is supposed to protect them. These children do not bond properly.

Adopting disabled children from the system is a mine field. VERY FEW will even consider the idea. A promise of care to families may put a few more of these kids in loving homes and give them the hope for a normal, happy life. Keith..put up or shut up

..and they are some of the first things to be cut when tax cuts come. This is a state failing it's children and needy. The avg. person cannot afford the help this child needs. Insurance only covers so much and tries to cover less. Sad.

"The help he needs". Children, bio. or adopted can have mental illness and become mentally ill adults. The blame game here is stupid. It assumes some magic expensive tx will help this child. Maybe yes, maybe no. MH services stink nation wide.

My wife and I are in the same situation with a 12yr. old girl. She has already assaulted my wife and continually threatens our adopted 7yr.old twins. We have a counselor for her but it is doing no good.I feel for Nancy because I can relate.

We need more state funded mental health facilities in this state. You should not have to abandon your child to get the help he needs. There are many adults/children in jail that should be in mental help facilities.

Clearly, many people do not understand this situation because they have not lived it. As a mother who has lived it day in, day out for 12 years in our home and continue to manage care for our daughter, I can say that support is crucial for success.

Florida does not tell Adoptive Parents the truth when they adopt older kids.We also are going thru charges to get a a/child mental health help.Yep we have Insurance but HMO won't pay.When I see Children up for adoption I wonder what is wrong .

There are two faults here, the state for releasing a child that needs help and the adoptive parents for adopting a child beyond their capacity to care for. If you adopt you should have full responsibility.

There are many parents that have children with simular problems to Nancy's son. There is no help or understanding. And if he was her bio-child, she would have to put him in foster care to get help & protect her other children.

If she had given birth to him, he wouldn't have been exposed to drugs/alcohol. This isn't a bio child. It's a child adopted thru the state, which then gave up assisting the family. Shouldn't we help kids & give more help to adoptive families?

To say that this child should be no different than birth children is naive. He is SEVERELY damaged, and needs serious intervention. The only way she, the responsible parent, can get that for him, is by legally abandoning him so the state will step in

If the child were her biological child, there would be no doubt as to whose responsibility the child is. The responsibility belongs to the parents. It shouldn't be different because the child is adopted. No money back guarantee on adoptions.

Nancy Bostock tries for an Intelligent Design

This is the same lady (Nancy Bostock, Pinellas County School Board Marm)who wanted to dump her adopted kid back off ... and/OR have the state pay for his care in a group home while she visited on Sunday and patted herself on the back for being a great adoptive parent.

O'Shea worries that children who are taught creationism at home might be confused by evolution. And Bostock wonders if creationism could be taught without saying it's science.

I did kindly suggest that she go and resign the school board and stay home and teach her adoptive child Intelligent Design .... OH OOPS, can't DO that.

Apparently the kid had reason for trying to kill her. She was pushing her fundy Christian views on him and he couldn't take it anymore.

Surely I misunderstood that any Pinellas School Board member is supporting the teaching of ID in science classrooms. They need to do their homework on the subject. How does one recall a board member anyway?

There are about 10,000 distinct religions in the world. So if "fairness" (from the neo-con perspective) were important, teaching creationism (regardless of what you call it) as an alternative to reality (oops, science)would take all available time.

Please don't stop with just teaching ID. Lets teach alchemy with chemistry, astrology with astronomy, and witchcraft with physics. Ya, we need a well balanced curriculum so all kids can make up their own minds. We know more than any scientist!

Evolution is a scientiic theory. ID is a religious belief. Teach science in science class. Teach religion somewhere that does not have legally required attendance and is not funded by my tax dollars.

There is much confusion regarding the nature of "fact" vs "theory" Evolution is a theory that is based on (supported by) facts. Intelligent Design is a faith-based theory that has no verifiable, measurable, supporting evidence that can be tested.
